Babe Ruth auto from an autograph book.

I have an autograph book that I think dates from the early 1940s. It's primarily celebrities such as Jack Benny, Vivian Leigh and Bob Hope. There are two sports autographs, Jim Braddock and Babe Ruth. I posted the Ruth auto on eBay a while back and got mixed opinions. You can tell from the toning from the opposite page on the Ruth page that this book has some age to it. Similar toning is found throughout the book. Opinions on the Ruth auto? I have also posted a third link that DiMaggio collectors may find interesting. Thanks.

The Ruth is genuine.

Looks like Babe is enjoying a Peep Show.

Fortunately we have lots of autograph experts on this board who will almost certainly give their opinions and reasons.

As a buyer, I would first want to see a valid Ruth signature that looked like yours (with all the loops) - haven't been able to find one yet.

That's what I was thinking Scott. I am not a Ruth expert, but it just doesn't look like anything I have seen. What time period did Babe sign this way with all the loops and the funny looking "e" and "h"?

Any chance of seeing the Jack Benny?

Ken

Interestingly, Helen Parrish, the actress in the first link, as a child, played Babe Ruth's daughter, in the movie, "Babe Comes Home".

Except that Jim was laughing out loud at the "peep show" posting, not the autograph. (Which, as I stated before, is good.)

I thought you were joking in your original post. Is there any way you could be wrong about this one?

David Atkatz 11-02-2012 11:06 AM

I could be wrong. But I do think it's a very rushed, in-person signature.

Helen Parrish started in movies at the age of five, getting her first part playing Babe Ruth's daughter in the silent film, Babe Comes Home in 1927.

Parrish looks about 20 or so there, mid-1940s, in line with that newspaper shot of Babe, which may have been the only shot of Ruth that the book creator could easily get a hold of mid 1940s. so that makes sense. and the display next to Ruth - and maybe acquiring autographs when Babe and Helen were together at a function - makes sense.

But I agree with the above. One of those rare cases where if I were the authenticator, I would not confirm authentic, but wouldnt say for absolute certainty it was bad. but I wouldnt be a buyer, never saw all those loops before and the B looks a good bit off. tough one. My best.

Maybe the Ruth was something secretarial that was mailed back to the original collector?

GrayGhost 11-03-2012 06:15 AM

Why is the Ruth Genuine? my first impression is N O good, but David is more of an expert than Me. Not to open up the old alphabet stuff again, but where are the exemplars that look that "loopy" to tell me that this one is good?

thetruthisoutthere 11-05-2012 05:58 PM

In my opinion, that Babe Ruth is not authentic.

It's nice to be back after seven (7) days without power due to "Sandy."

laughlinfan 11-05-2012 06:18 PM

No autograph expert, but I would think that if the autographs were actually made in the book, I would be more apt to think they must be real and collected in person, as the book and the aging certainly look vintage - as cuts, the Ruth could be secretarial, or maybe even someone removed an original authentic cut and replaced it with another.
