Cards that never seem to come up for sale

I've got a nice chunk of change saved up that I'm dying to spend on cards I've always wanted. The problem is, they never seem to come up for sale. I'd kill for a low grade Joe Jackson M101-4 or a low grade Honus Cracker Jack. An E95 Honus in a 1 or 2 with great eye appeal? Where are you!? I'd do anything for the chance to buy a PSA/SGC 2 Collins-McCarthy Tris Speaker. If only someone had one.

What are some cards you've been wanting to add to your collection that never seem to come up for sale?

T205 Sovereigns

I've been waiting for a T205 Beck and Bender to show up, although they may not even exist. They are the last two that I have on my "suspected, but not seen" list. I also have been jonesing for a Bescher, which I saw, but didn't buy at the time...

Take Care,
Geno

Lave Cross Old Judge card. He is on my original wantlist I made before I ever bought a single OJ card back when I was a teenager. Nearly 20 years later, I can't recall ever having a chance to bid on one, definitely hasn't shown up anytime recent that I've seen.

Carolina Brights or Broad Leaf backed Solly Hofman....come on peoples....let them be free.

wolf441 09-22-2012 08:09 PM

It's been awhile since I've seen a low grade T206 Drum back that was up for bid in a real (no reserve/buy it now/ridiculously high opening) auction. Although, truth be told, I've only recently started joining the non-ebay auction houses (thanks Net54!! :)). So I may just not be looking hard enough!

He is another card that doesn't come up, along with about 50 other OJ players. Just like with the Cross, it will go for big bucks when it does show up just because we haven't seen one recently. Try finding a Taylor Shaffer, my good friend Kevin will tell you that you shouldn't let one of these tough players get away, even if it isn't the player you're looking for, you could always try to use it as trade bait. I would love to get a William Veach OJ but I've never even put it on my wantlist for a reason, I'm not going to be able to afford it if it does come up

The 1880s Sporting Times rarely come up for sale. I assume because they're rare.

A lot rarer than the Just So's

John, what do you think a cross would go for? he is also on my want list :)

I think I wouldn't bid too crazy, though, I think Louiville cards have been hitting the moon much harder then they have in the past... They're leaving craters.

I would also like to know your take on what a veach, we're one to surface as a single in a lot, would sell for.

Matt

They come up every once in a while, but I have not found an E300 Plows Candy for my type card collection.

z28jd 09-22-2012 11:39 PM

Cross is going to go for a ton if it is his Louisville version because he is so tough(and a great player) and the team is highly collectible by some big spenders. If you can find his Philadelphia version and it isn't the Player's League card, it could be in a more manageable price range. For a (low)gradeable one it will still be around 1k but there are so many variables, such as two pose collectors needing the card. They could battle it out one time and sky is the limit. I would say the longer you go without seeing it, the higher the price goes so I could be way off on that estimate.

Veach, if it isn't his California League card(which could go 6 figures), would be another sky is the limit card. I think even if a pose collector has his pose, they are still bidding on it because they know it is great trade bait. Hard to put a price range on it. I know I'd give it a good effort but wouldn't expect to be among the top 2 bidders.

Collecting an OJ player set(even without Cal Lg cards) isn't for the faint of heart or an impatient person. There are enough common players in the set to keep you occupied for awhile though, plus different poses of easy players

Just checked, didn't see any in the Oregon Find, saw one in the Indy find and that one was sold before I knew about it. If you have any other questions, just PM me. If there is one thing I know, it is how much OJ's usually cost(usually more than I can afford) and which ones are harder to find. You learn a lot about them by being an underbidder more often than not

Matthew H 09-23-2012 12:20 AM

Nice, thanks John, I'll be blowing up your inbox at some point.

Tough OJs

Don't listen to John Dreker - he has a secret OJ agenda! And he will never let me live down my infamous Taylor Shafer blunder! ;)

I can second John's assertion on the scarcity of the Lave Cross N172. I found an N173 of him before I ever obtained my N172. And I found both the Buster Hoover and Williamson and mascot to be particularly vexing. Like a long list of others, I would love to obtain a Jake Wells and a Peek-A-Boo Veach (because of their interesting backgrounds) as well as a Frank Hankinson. He's the last player I need for my New Jersey Old Judge subset.

T205 Matty AB, 205 Cycle Grant, 205 Cycle Dahlen, 205 Gibson AB. Just a few of my "White Whales" so to speak.

Kevin, if it makes you feel better, I don't know about your Taylor Schafer blunder and I promise not to try to find out :)

Andrew -- I agree about the AB Gibson. I saw one on eBay a number of months back and hesitated because I couldn't tell if it was real (admittedly I was skeptical because to that point I had never heard of one existing). Could be a while before that one is seen again.

Another Gibson that doesn't hit the block too often is the e92 Croft's Cocoa.

Regards,

Richard.

Matt, I'll tell you all about it when you write me...trust me, it is a good story :)

I'll also tell you about my own OJ blunder, not such a good story

Mullane seemed fairly easy for a time. I haven't really been looking for his cards because I have two and at one time had a third but traded it away. I'm guessing people are holding on to him because he seems like a possible HOF player someday. After what the HOF election did to the price of Bid McPhee cards, that probably isn't a bad idea

the-illini 09-23-2012 09:38 PM

N172 Ned Williamson- formal wear. Lew Lipset had one in an auction about 10 years ago - I bid around 2k but I dont think I had a chance. I haven't seen one since. Also would like a McCormick in a top hat and suit since I am dreaming...

ANY card from:

1933 Wheaties Seattle Indians
1937 Imperial Candy Seattle Indians

Robextend 09-25-2012 08:01 AM

Rose Co. Waddell, also haven't seen a W555 Waddell in a while.

Runscott 09-25-2012 09:33 AM

I'm still waiting for two post-cards to appear at auction. Only one example of one, and I have never seen the second, though I feel certain it exists. There was a third I was looking for, also with only one example, but I acquired a second this year.

The English language is really a mess, isn't it?
