Greenberg TSN art
2 Attachment(s)
Happened to catch the documentary "Jews and Baseball" on PBS a couple of weeks back, and it showed the attached Sporting News article from 1935. It reminded me that last year I picked up a few pieces of Sporting News artwork, and subscribed to Paper of Record for a few months to find out when the art was used. One of the pieces was the facial illustration by Lank Leonard of Greenberg used in this issue - I was happy to be able to match the art to the article. Seems like it was a standard practice to save off some of the art in their files for future use - I did find a couple of drawings that were used again in later issues.

Cool item. Much of the TSN art has survived and has made its way into the secondary market.
As for Paper of Record, if you become a SABR member http://www.sabr.org, you get free Paper of Record access as part of your membership. Max |
Thanks, Max! I did actually look at a SABR membership, but (foolishly!) thought I could do all of my research in a month. It was OK as I was OK downloading page by page issues that were 12-18 pages (the 20s and 30s) - once I got to the 32 and 64 page issues, my progress slowed down significantly!
It has been a lot of fun seeing some of the cool things that TSN had in their archives in the past year or two - picked up some nice small art pieces and a few photos that have called to me! Marty |
