What's the difference between T206 & T212

I'm a newcomer to pre-war cards and have been picking up a few T206s. I have a card that was listed as a T212, but it looks so much like the T206s that I was wondering the difference between them. Sorry if this is a repeat question/thread. Thanks in advance for the responses.

T212 Obak's contained Pacific Coast League players only had had no cross-over with the T206 player checklist (and vice versa on no T206's containing the PCL players).

The obvious answer is 6.

Actually while they look similar, they were distributed in different places by different makers and are completely distinct issues. The stock is slightly different with the Obaks having a little more sheen. The obaks have players from the west coast while T206s have players from the east and central US. The T206s include but are not exclusively major leaguers, the T212s are exclusibly players from the Pacific Coast League (none of which are included in the T206 issue). There are also font variations between the T206 and T212s...in other words, while they are somewhat visually similar, they are completely distinct.

Don't the Obak set include players from the North West League (NWL) as well as from the PCL?

Thanks for the info everyone. What's the demand on T212s?

Andy, it is purple stamped. Do you collect T212s?

E93 09-10-2012 12:15 PM

T212s are popular both because they are such beautiful cards and because there are PCL and NWL collectors. Although there are some major leaguers who started in the PCL, like Buck Weaver, most of the players are not well known to non-specialists. THe lack of major leaguers and particularly HOFs probably limits popularity, especially relative to T206s, but they are definitely great cards and in my opinion, some of the best looking cards from the era.

Please show more if you got them.

The PCL was really a major league in it's own right, although it wasn't MLB.

Many players salaries in the PCL were comparable to Major league, plus you get to live on the west coast :) Some players made the decision to stay in the PCL, even though they could have done well in the "majors". I personally don't consider the PCL a minor league. There are no MLB HOF players in the Obak sets, PCL stars are not eligible for the MLB HOF. There are plenty of PCL HOFs in the set, though. Here is a list of the PCL HOF:

I don't collect Obaks although I have some. I believe the purple stamp on the back of yours is a tax stamp and they are very common on Obaks. Someone else will have to confirm that though.

Thanks,

AndyH

Pile of Obaks

John's not the only one with a pile of Obaks.;)

atx840 09-10-2012 03:02 PM

Very cool John!

curtis-cards 09-10-2012 03:07 PM

What's the difference in the backs, if any. Besides the color and fonts. :)

dstudeba 09-10-2012 03:13 PM

They were issued over 3 years 1909,1910,and 1911. The 1909 are the "Old English" font, the 1910 have slogans with "150 subjects" or "175 subjects", and the 1911 have player info and stats.

The cabinets have a number written on pencil on a blank back.

They are truly addictive cards.

ullmandds 09-10-2012 04:38 PM

the difference is: almost everybody loves...and collects T206...whereas the opposite is true of t212.

And it is the word almost that makes all the difference.

Peter, your statement that "almost everybody loves...and collects T206..." is a politician's stretch! 35% of the respondees to the current Net 54 poll re Who Collects T206 have indicated that they Do NOT collect T206!!
Val

I have a slightly different pile of Obaks...

ullmandds 09-11-2012 03:02 PM

Sorry...the difference between t206 and t212 is that 2 of 3 vintage card collectors collect and love t206...while another poll will be necessary to determine that much fewer vintage collectors love and collect t212.

peterose4hof 09-11-2012 03:18 PM

John,

That Weaver Cabinet is mind-blowingly awesome! Well done sir.

You are the king of hoarders.

wonkaticket 09-11-2012 04:46 PM

Thanks for the kind words guys, this really is a great set. I dare say in terms of beauty it's better overall than T206.

Also nice cards everyone.

That is such a killer image of all those Millers! I'm so glad I'm not needing that card to finish a set...LOL.
