What Is The Autograph Card Holy Grail
Readng the Addie Ross autgraphed thread got me thinking what is the Holy Grail of signed cards? I would have to vote for the 1933 Goudey Nap Lajoie. A certain signed Gehrig card that a fellow Net54er has and post often is a close second IMO. What does every one else think?

Signed T206 Wagner would be pretty sweet (Honus not Heinie).

I would also vote for the autographed Goudey Lajoie, originally sold in the Sotheby's Halper sale. It was mentioned in this thread, where a couple photos were posted. Aaroncc shared this scan....

There are plenty of Ruth signed Goudey's around, as well as Gehrig's surprisingly, but there are about 3 known T206 Mathewson's to be signed, I don't know about the authenticity, but that would be my number one without a doubt. He died in 1925, but unlike Joss, has a decent amount of autographs, but only a few on cards. I am the owner of the Gehrig, and I'm flattered you view my card as that, but I honestly don't think it's even in the top 25 for "Holy Grail" of signed cards. It's extremely rare, but my gosh, I'd rather have any of the above, those are amazing. |

holy grail
I own the Duffy mentioned and used to own the T206 Young but traded it for the Duffy. I'd love the T206 Johnson but would be surprised if a Matty existed. I used to have Matty's wife on a T206 but gave it to Paul.
I am sure there are quite a few cards that only one signed example exists. My GC Alexander on Paul's site has to be the only one. I say a T-206 McGraw that PSA turned down but I think is real. The T-206 Bresnahan. I persoannly would love a Cobb and a Wagner from their playing days |
Is there any signed copies of the Baltimore News Ruth out there? If so, I'd have to say that would be up there. I don't know if it exists though.

I know of a Matty Gar Miller once had, that got turned down by PSA, but when I spoke with him, he swears that it was authentic and that he wished he would have kept it instead of returning it to the seller.
Bresnahan, Speaker, Lajoie, could possibly be the only one's, and Frank Chance. I know of a Speaker signed '33 Goudey in gorgeous fountain pen |
I think the Goudey Lajoie is the best signed card that exists. Amazed me that it existed when I first saw it.
Only theoretical/speculative cards (ala Honus) would beat it at this point. |

Jim Thorpe signed M101 would be pretty sweet.
Or a Hal Chase signed Turkey Red. Really any signed Turkey Red. Never seen one. |

Anyone ever seen a Mordecai Brown signed card? He lived pretty long after his career ended but I've never heard of one.
A Plank signed 1914 CJ would be incredible. |

There's an M116 signed Wood that's awesome.

Years ago I bought ARod/Ichiro multi signed cards from Gar that I am incredibly skeptical of.
CJ's are neat. Would love the Hooper on Pauls site. he has been trying to pry loose my Rousch and Marquard unsuccessfuly for years |

A few notes

When I first got the signed WaJo, I sent a scan to Hank Thomas (Johnson's grandson). His response was:
"Fabulous card! I'm not sure I've ever seen a card signed by him before, other than a signed T-3 I saw at the HOF a few years ago. Thanks for sharing it." So, apparently there is a signed T3 out there, though I've never seen one. Perhaps one day I'll be able to sift through the HOFs collection of signed cards. Wouldn't that be something!? I would have to agree that the Lajoie signed Goudey is the ultimate signed baseball card. But there are a lot of really exciting ones out there. I would love to own the T206 Lajoie from Morey's collection, copied below. I might even part with my WaJo or CYoung for it, because I love the Morey provenance... |

Brown lived until 1948 so he had almost 30 years to sign at least one T206. Wonder if there is one out there.

Gehrig
Pretty sure I wouldn't kick this out of bed for eating crackers....

Signed T210 Jackson- would be worth a TON of cash, and doesn't exist.
Also a W600 Addie Joss |
Thanks for the clarifications Paul. Yeah the Morey collection is unbelievable, I really enjoyed reading it a few times on your site.
Little shameless plug, if you guys love hearing about signed T206's and stories behind them, go to T206Collector.com, and read the Morey interview about how he got signed T206's in person from the likes of Ty Cobb and others. It's a great link to the past. |

Top 3 are from Gar. These are the ones I am skeptical of and your opinions are welcome. Sorry for poor contrast Bottom is not for contrast as it is a more contemporary Ichiro but my favorite signed Japanese card. I got Matsui in person and Ichiro through Mill Creek. It is a 1998 BBM card. Never seen another signed. Would be better in Kanji but I am still very happy with it http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...ary/gar001.jpg |

+ 1 for Giambi being a great signer. He was the only Yankee you could count on at spring training. Always funny.
|
i would think any n172's that had been signed would be pretty neat but the holy grail would be a bid mcphee signed n172 it would be worth major money.
|
T205 Joss ;)
Grail talk begins and ends with the T206 Wagner, IMO. Now, as for a card I'd most like to own signed if it exists: PC Back Exhibit Babe Ruth portrait. |
If it existed I'd give anything to pick up a Mike Donlin signed T206 seated version. Always loved that card.
