T216 Wagner (virginia extra back)

Does anybody know if this card even exists? The vintagecardprices database doesn't show any sales for any of the 4 possible variations of the card (batting, throwing, 2b, ss)

So I am guessing it just doesn't exist. But my real question is, were they never produced with virginia extra backs, or are there just not any surviving examples?

VE's

Hi Dave,
Finding info on the Louisiana issue is difficult. Both SGC and PSA have pop reports that are pretty much worthless.

PSA shows "Peoples" as a 1911-16 issue, with 144 cards graded. There isn't a Wagner and none of the back are identified so we don't know if they are Kotton, Mino, or Virginia Extra's.

SGC shows them as 1914. 1 VE, Dooin is graded, along with 3 Mino's. Kotton isn't listed, but 7 Peoples card are graded, so I'm guessing they are Kottons, but who knows?

The Standard Catalog seems to have written the same basic caption, along with the same basic checklist, for all 3 of the People's issues, but no one knows which cards are really in existence for Mino and VE's.

Lew Lipsett gives a pretty good explanation of the set, but once again, Lew doesn't seem to know which cards have been found.

Dave's Vintage Cards has a good selection of Kotton's and Mino's for sale.
https://www.gfg.com/baseball/nuaquire.shtml

BTW, the grading companies haven't done a great job identifying some of the other Louisiana issues, such as Weil Baking and Coupons.

Wish I could be more help!

Rick

The Kotton's aren't too hard to find... Most of the T216s have that back. I have a couple wagners with Kotton back. The mino's are pretty rare, I have only ever seen of a few, and they are expensive. There are a few on ebay right now, seller wants 30K+ for the pair.

Anyway, thanks for the link and info!

Virginia Extra backs are by far the toughest T216s. My thought is that all players were made and only a scant few survived, especially in nice condition. "Nice" condition for these is anything better than beat to He!!. I have never seen a Wags and if one exists it would be very rare. The reason these are so tough is their limited distribution and their paper-thin stock they are made on.

It's fun to be able to update old threads when new information comes to light.

Up until now, I didn't think any of these survived. Theoretically, both the Wagner batting and throwing Virginia Extra cards could exist with the "s.s. Pittsburg Nat'l" caption.

I was lucky enough to acquire this batting example this past weekend, and I've never heard of another.

Cheers,
Steve

Sam

Sam, that is an incredible pickup as well and a very nice 1 grade...for some reason I could get a Wagner 2B throwing MINO and Wagner 2B Kotton batting but not vice versa...Jerry

brass_rat 11-04-2024 07:37 PM

Thanks, everyone!

Yes, Ryan -- this card truly completes my Wagner batting pose E/D/T card run which makes it that much more special!

And great Mino, Sam!

That is a pretty clean "1"

Interesting that this singular example has a printer's mark at the top — I haven't seen other t216s that have printer's lines like that. But I have not seen a lot of T216s.

It's a spectacular find, is there any more history of the card that you can share?

Congrats, Steve

What an absolute monster of a card

calvindog 11-06-2024 04:00 PM

Wow, I’ve never seen this card.

brass_rat 11-06-2024 06:48 PM

Thanks again, everyone :)

David -- I don't have any scanned examples handy, but the printer's mark is not uncommon for the thin paper issues. I'm not sure where the previous owner obtained the card, but it wasn't any time in the recent past.

Cheers,
Steve

Steve,

I am positive other board members and myself would love to hear how you acquired that beauty. I am interested in the backstory of the seller as well if you have any information to share, it would be beneficial for all. Plus I love a good pre-war baseball card find story. Congrats on the awesome buy and being the owner of an incredibly unique card.

Casey2296 11-07-2024 01:42 PM
