David, that's a great Gehrig ticket. I have to imagine it's very rare.

Last couple: Gionfriddo's 1947 game 6 catch robbing Dimaggio's homerun, and Brooks Robinson's fielding clinic in the 1970 WS...in this case, game 3 catch off of Johnny Bench.

Umpire game ball, ticket and photo from Johnny Vander Meer's ML record second consecutive no-hitter on June 15, 1938. This is likely a record that will never be broken....

Bob Feller speed test night August 20th, 1946
 

Here is a photo of Bob Feller throwing a 98.6 MPH pitch on August 20th, 1946 at Washington DC. The pitch was measured using a fairly sophisticated contraption for 1946. This promotional night was announced by Senators management to the public prior to the unsuspecting Feller and the visiting Indians arriving for their appointed series in Aug. 1946. Oops! Rumor has it that Feller refused, and only agreed to participate once the Senators agreed to cough up $500. If nothing else, Rapid Robert was no slouch when it came to sniffing out a business opportunity.

By today's standards this looks pretty primitive, but consider that prior to this, Feller's fastball was measured by him throwing a ball through a target at the same time a speeding guy on a motorcycle raced to the same target at 90 MPH.

Just for grins, take the time to watch Feller throw in this speed test on YouTube. The coolest part is one of his errant pitches knocks the crap out of the contraption and splinters one of the supporting beams in the front of it. It's worth a couple minutes of your time if you're interested... I know I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of one of his heaters!

1951 Giants @ Yankees--the infamous Game 2 in which Mantle tore up his knee stepping on the drain plate in just his 2nd WS appearance.

I just got home from work and I was surprised to see such a terrific response to this thread! Thanks to everyone for posting so many great pieces... but, we're just getting started!

Now I must admit that part of my motive in starting this thread was to see David's absolutely incredible July 4, 1939 ticket stub! The #1 ticket in the hobby as far as I'm concerned. And I think I can speak for Mark & Ben as well. Although Ben also has one of the top tickets in the hobby, if I can just get him to post it... Ben?

And Rob. I thought I was the only one walking around with that information stuck in my head! ;) Great stub Rob, especially for such a dedicated Tribe fan like yourself!

Scott, that's a great ball. How did you get that one? I can say without a doubt that Vandy's record will never be broken...maybe tied, but does anyone really expect a pitcher is going to throw 3 no hitters in a row?

Jimmy, thanks for starting this thread. Famous plays and tickets for those games are now a primary focus in my collecting. I know I'll never get a 7/4/39 Gehrig ticket or a "shot heard round the world" ticket, but there are so many other great events that are readily available.

Here are a couple of signed magazines representing famous plays. I don't have the tickets for these yet, but they're on the to get list.

I wish that I owned the Vander Meer 2nd no-hitter game ball, but I do not. It was in the collection of baseball collector/ composer Seth Swirsky until a few months ago, but was sold in the Heritage Seth Swirsky Auction. It sold for over $10K, BTW.

I have known about the ball for several years, and have hung on to the photos of it that were on Swirsky's website. For my collection this would definitely be a "Holy Grail" piece, but I coudn't afford it when it came up for sale. You never know though, I may attempt to own it at some point in my life if I'm given another shot at it... :cool:

Billy Williams Hits for Cycle - Consecutively
 

Billy Williams hits for the cycle in St Louis in 1966, and becomes only the 11th player in ML history to do so consecutively. This is my scorecard from that game which I attended.

Beautiful job of scoring the game. Very nice! ;)

33 Inning Game
 

I was fortunate enough to attend the ending of Pro baseball's longest game, the 33 inning affair between the Rochester Red Wings & the Pawtucket Red Sox in 1981.

Using a Press Pass from the Providence Journal got me in the press box area w/ hundreds of reporters from around the world covering the game. After the game was over my BILaw took my pass into the locker room & got some sigs from a few of the principals in the PawSox victory & I have since added some other mainstays of the game.

Signatures include Bobby Ojeda (winning pitcher), Dave Koza (winning RBI), Marty Barrett (winning run), team owner Ben Mondor (now deceased) and the 2 HOFer's to play in that game (Wade Boggs & Cal Ripken).

One of my most favorite pieces of memorabilia & I'm sure one that is unique in the hobby.

That is one of the neatest "personal" pieces I have ever seen.

Just saw your post.

The main thing I recall from that final day was the massive media coverage from all over the world. They closed off several sections of seating just to have a place for the media to set up. ----and then it was over in about 10 minutes or so as Pawtucket scored in it's first atbat! There was chaos on the field as the media descended to interview players & head for the locker rooms!

National columnist & author Dan Barry of the NY Times previously worked under my sister at the Providence Journal before going to NY. He wrote this book on the historic 33 inning game this past yr. and it's now a nice companion piece to my Press Pass from that game.

To stay the course and keep focused enough to see it to completion, is something I know I'll never experience. :o What a great sense of achievement one must feel when the final piece has been put into place. I truly admire all collectors that have the will and discipline to finish projects that they start. I know that Scott just recently finished a project that took him over TEN years to complete! :eek:

And so, even though all my tickets and programs have been sold and converted into Beatles memorabilia, I just couldn't part with the photos! ;)

Here's the 1933 American League All-Star Team led by the Grand Old Man, Connie Mack. The Bambino, of course, hit the first Home Run in All Star Game History and lead the Junior Circuit to a 4-2 victory.

Nolan Ryan and Sandy Koufax ML Strikeout record tickets and scorebooks
 

Thanks, Jimmy! As Jimmy stated, this thread is definitely in my wheelhouse.

Here are some of my all-time favorite tickets and scorebooks in my personal collection:

1) Ticket stubs from the last game of HOF'ers Sandy Koufax's 382 K Cy Young season in 1965 and Nolan Ryan's ML record 383 K season in 1973.

Koufax still holds the NL and lefty hurler record for a single season, although (future HOF'er) Randy Johnson got close a couple of times.

Nolan Ryan is a collecting focus of mine and I am biased, but IMHO I believe that his 383 K record is more impressive because he did it in the AL during the 1st year of the DH era (1973). In 1973 American League pitchers didn't have the luxury of padding their strikeout totals by pitching to other hurlers.

Note: Had a rainout in KC not washed out one of Nolan's starts in September, he might have possibly struck out 390-400 batters in 1973. Additionally, he was scheduled to pitch the final game in Anaheim in 1973, but still managed to break Koufax's record in spite of pulling a hamstring in the 383 K game. I was actually at this game and saw Ryan set the ML record. :cool:

2) Scorebooks/programs from Sandy's 382 K game and Nolan's ML record 383 K game

3) Dated parking pass from Ryan's 383 K game

At the time, it was thought to be the final baseball game at the Polo Grounds - the radio broadcast of the game begins with Lindsey Nelson commenting, "Polo Grounds may never be the same, but [it] won't really matter very much because this is the final game of the season here, and the Mets are scheduled to open up next year at the new municipal stadium at Flushing Meadows." (As everyone knows, the Mets played another season at the Polo Grounds, and the new stadium, which we know as Shea Stadium, opened in 1964.)

Mickey Mantle's 27th- and 26th-to-last games - New York Yankees v. the California Angels at Yankee Stadium, August 27, 1968. This was a doubleheader. In the first game, the Yankees won 2-0 (Mantle went 0-for-3 but drove in a run). In the second game, California won 2-0 (Mantle was a pinch-hitter and struck out).

Nolan Ryan's 21st Major League game - New York Mets v. Atlanta Braves at Shea Stadium, September 3, 1968. This was a doubleheader. The Mets won the first game, 4-3 (Tom Seaver was the winning pitcher - he pitched 7 innings, gave up 8 hits, allowed 3 earned runs, and struck out 5). Atlanta won the second game 7-6 (Al Jackson got the loss; Nolan Ryan, in his 21st career game, pitched 4.1 innings, gave up 4 hits, allowed 1 earned run, and struck out 2).

The Montreal Expos' final home win - Montreal Expos v. the Philadelphia Phillies at Olympic Stadium, September 24, 2004. The Expos defeated the Phillies 8-1. Sun-Woo Kim got the win, and Brett Myers got the loss. (After this homestand, the Expos would win 2 more games on the road, in New York.)

July 13, 1977 game program.
It was acquired and scored at the game by a much younger version of me. I was present at the game with my father.

This game was played on July 13, 1977. Ray Burris vs Jerry Koosman.
It was around 9:30 pm with Lenny Randle batting. The stadium went dark. You could see a little out the back that the whole area was dark, but nobody knew it was the whole of NYC that had lost power.
It was kind of surreal. For a while, everyone waited, figuring it was temporary. No one panicked. The organist, Jane Jarvis, played music. In a bit, a couple of cars were brought on to the field through the outfield fence. The headlights were put on to light up the field and a few players came out to run around and entertain us. I don't know who they were as we couldn't see them all that well.
A bit later, the news filtered in that the whole of NYC was blacked out. Most people hurried to their cars to get out of there. My dad drove home without any highway or street lights. There was lots of mayhem.

The blackout lasted until the next day. Power returned one area at a time starting around 7am. By 10:40 the power had been restored to the entire city. Unfortunately, this blackout was marked by extreme vandalism and theft.

Just read Koosman had 11 strikeouts when the lights went out.

June 18, 1927, and the St. Louis Cardinals pay tribute to the 1926 World Series by raising a huge championship flag at Sportsman's Park. Special guest for the ceremonies was the hometown boy who had flown "The Spirit of St. Louis" alone to Paris less than a month earlier...Charles Lindbergh. On the field, Grover Cleveland Alexander gets a three-run homer by Sunny Jim Bottomley to defeat the Giants 6-4 before the capacity crowd.

In this game, played July 10, 1935, Babe Herman of the Reds hit the first home run in a night game in major league history. This was the fourth night game in MLB history, and the first night game for the visiting Brooklyn Dodgers.
