That was Great:D

Keith O. is the man when it comes to t206....I love when they gave him a pose;)

Top 5

1. Walter Johnson
2. Mathewson
3. Cobb Green
4. Chase Pink
5. Joe Tinker

Anthony S. 07-22-2012 12:07 AM

I'm colorblind (I really shouldn't be allowed to dress myself), but I seem to lean towards shades of green so the Ed Walsh and Bender Portrait have always appealed. Beyond that Johnson, even if he weren't a HOF, is a great looking card. And Tinker for his haircut. What the hell was he thinking?

Pat R 07-22-2012 06:50 AM

For me the portraits are my least favorite of the poses, but my top five
would be.

1 Weimer
2 Rucker
3 Dessau
4 Herzog
5 Chase (blue)

That is a cool one! Joss' hair looks like he was on that Seinfeld episode when the "low flow shower heads" were installed in the building.

I am happy to see so many pick Dougherty as well. I just love the background color on that one.

I have to agree with everyone else's picks.....because I can't pick just 5 :D

Along with a certain strange attraction to the 150 series cards that I seem to have, I have the same for most all of the portrait T206's. The artwork on some of these cards, to me at least, is mind blowing for the era. Here are some that I love- and there are many I love but do not have. Also, beautiful cards Tony, you have great taste !!!

Sincerely, Clayton

Of the top tier HOF'ers

#1 Cy Young - great green color, very nice picture image

#2 Walter Johnson - yellow background ok, not the best, quality picture image

#3 Cobb - red or green, bummer the same image on both, average image

Honus Wagner - love the orange background, great image, but dreamer if ever able to obtain one, so kinda doesn't count

wazoo 07-25-2012 01:29 PM

5. Mathewson
4. Cobb (Green)
3. Chase (Pink)
2. Lajoie
1. Parent

These are only the ones off the top of my head. I believe all the portraits are unique and special.

darwinbulldog 07-25-2012 02:11 PM

1. Rucker
2. Walsh
3. Dougherty
4. Johnson
5. Chase, pink

CMIZ5290 07-25-2012 05:06 PM

There is nothing like a red cobb portrait when it has that blazing color, with bright white borders.....Hal Case Pink gets a close second, just so hard to find in high grade!!

CMIZ5290 07-25-2012 05:10 PM

Images on red/ green Cobbs

Backstroke- You are not quite correct on the images being the same. They are in fact different.....Hope someone can post scans to show the differences.

The red Cobb/green Cobb is a good example of just how much difference there is among the T206 portraits (as is the pink Chase/blue Chase). You might prefer the 'artwork' done to create portraits like the red Cobb, Devlin, Merkle, blue Chase or Mathewson, but they weren't created by the same artists as the green Cobb, Johnson, Young, Evers, Brown, Dougherty, pink Chase. To me, the difference in style/technique is so clear that you could go through all the portraits and drop most of them in buckets, by artist(s).

The fact that most of them were made from photos by Horner makes no difference - it's obvious that multiple artists transformed the photos into lithographs.

GregMitch34 07-26-2012 09:46 AM

And, by and large, the star players were given to the best artists (not always, though).

A back-burner project has been to drop each T206 in an artist 'bucket', then check the results. Some of it is personal preference, as indicated by the board split on the green vs red Cobb, but what you said makes sense.
