1985 MSA Thom McAn JOX discs - please educate me - FINALLY FOUND MY ANSWER!!
The Beckett Almanac states that there are a handful of discs from this set that were printed in multiple colors but they don't take the obvious next step in telling you what the colors are or even listing them as variations A/B in the set list. They say that the Fernando Valenzuela disc is one of the discs that has multiple colors but I've only ever seen the yellow one. Can anyone confirm that the second color for Fernando exists, and if so, what color it is? Thank you.

Well, I cannot confirm Valenzuela, but right now on ebay there are
20 Thom McCann discs with at least 3 colors, maybe 4 Pink, green, yellow (maybe red, or it might be pink, I did not take time to check each listing well) There are 2 different Cecil Coopers, one green and one pink (or red), so it seems possible that Valenzuela could have several colors, but I really do not know for sure There are also many graded by PSA so perhaps the Pop report could give you some information. Here is the ebay link http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=...sc&_osacat=212 |
Columbia City Collectibles has a complete set for sale. You could try asking them what color the Valenzuela is in their set. http://www.columbiacitycollectibles....85-1989_1.html
Consequently, they are a great source of oddball cards/collectibles. They helped me finish my 1949 Eureka Stamps Cincinnati Reds team set a while back. |
yeah, Columbia City Collectibles has been a great resource for me in the past as well...just wish they didn't gouge on their prices so much or I'd buy more from them. The set they are selling is a 47-disc set so it doesn't include more than one variation of any player but I will ask them if the Valenzuela is the non-yellow variation. If it is maybe they'll sell it to me if I send them a different one. If they don't there's no way I'm shelling out $500 for the set, that's ridiculous!

Color Variations
1 Attachment(s)
Here are some color variations I've found of other players in the set. While there is at least six different colors, the most any one player has is TWO and as seen in the pic there's no consistency on what those two colors are. Still trying to figure out if F. Valenzuela has two colors, I've only seen the yellow one...if he does, odds are the other one is blue...any help is appreciated.

George Brett is pictured on the box or display but I've never heard of one surfacing in the hobby. |

While I appreciate you chiming in, simply stating a second Fernando variation doesn't exist without siting a source or how you happened upon this information that contradicts a published source (Beckett Almanac) is unhelpful. Please provide how you came to understand a second Fernando color doesn't exist when Beckett says that it is one of eight discs in the set that are confirmed to have two color variations. As far as the Brett disc goes, Beckett mentions nothing about it and while SCD states that a couple people have reported seeing one they don't go so far as to support the claims. |

Thom McAns in 2020
I finally got PSA to remove the George Brett phantom card from their 1985 Thom McAn listing. They are now showing only 46 different players as it should be, similar to Beckett.
I am working on them to grade the different colors for a master set. Just checking with you all to make sure I capture them all. These are he only 10 players with double colors: Ayala - red & orange Cedeno - red & green Cooper - red & green Cowens - yellow & blue Hargrove - red & green Leonard - yellow & blue Ripken - yellow & blue Valenzuela - yellow & blue Walker - red & orange Zahn - red & orange If you can show pictures of any others now is the time to include them |
