It's amazing how cheap 1911 sporting life's have gotten!

There are actually several psa 7's up on ebay that are $195 and less. This is a card that i think is a tremendous value, and extremely underrated.......

GregMitch34 06-27-2012 09:10 AM

I agree. Centering is usually very good. I think they are underrated because, let's face it, a lot of the pastel cards are washed out or in unpleasing color combos even in high grades. But many of those cards are actually quite striking--I love the purple shirts on some--and the blue variations are tremendous. And if you have the dough you have the Cobb, Matty, Lajoie options in both pastel and blue. Pick and choose and you can find many great looking options at good prices.

Full disclosure.....I have no M116s listed on ebay nor do I even know of anyone who has any as I haven't checked. But in looking down the ebay search of M116 there are some great cards for not a lot of money, relatively speaking. (I don't own this Clarke anymore....but the Matty I do, and love it)

Though I have never collected this set, I must agree that these are very cool cards and are under valued currently.

Matthew H 06-27-2012 09:42 AM

I have a couple on my want list, Cobb and Young. I keep an eBay saved search and when they come up, they don't seem to go very cheap. Roughly the same as their t206 counterparts. I can't speak on commons, but maybe thats just what they are, commons.

Leon,

Your Blue Matty is a very nice looking card. It looks like it should be graded higher than a three, based on the scan. Just my opinion.

Hey Tony
I know. I bought it from my auction partner Scott before we were associated. It has a barely perceptible wrinkle next to his head but otherwise it really does look like a better conditioned card than the grade would indicate. And my astute partner got a good price from me for it. I think I paid about $625 for it......which was steep back then. Regardless of the number on the slab I buy the card and it warranted a bit higher price (to me).

smtjoy 06-27-2012 10:08 AM

A cool set, one of my favorite Cobbs-

GregMitch34 06-27-2012 10:12 AM

The blue backgrounds with the bit of green at bottom are the best. if anyone has any graded examples to sell let me know.

ullmandds 06-27-2012 10:19 AM

I've always liked the portrait images of m116...I actually prefer the johnson to it's t206 portrait counterpart.

I think the way they were distributed contributes to so many high grade examples out there...and certainly dilutes the desirability as they are pretty easy to find in tip top shape.

I agree. The M116s are a favorite of mine. As a type collector, I have committed to buying only one example per type but have to admit that in the case of the M116s, I had to buy 3.
Jennings Psa7; bransfield and crandall both Psa6. The Jennings i won from
Barry Sloate's last auction, I'm proud to say. I had these 3 framed together with double mats--black and gold.
all the best,
barry

I'm so glad someone started this thread, as I love this set. I started collecting the Blue backgrounds recently and have really enjoyed them. I just picked-up this Lajoie yesterday (thank you for your referral, Leon)...

These cards seem to be rather undervalued in my opinion, for what they are. While I've enjoyed being able to buy them at relatively affordable prices - I am surprised they aren't going for more.

caramelcard 06-27-2012 01:49 PM

I agree they are a good value overall. The tougher cards are still going for good money in my opinion. Hope they stay relatively cheap until I find the last 4!

Fun set to collect!

What a tease.. Let's see um

MacDice 06-27-2012 09:23 PM

I agree. I picked up a real nice PSA 6 card the other day for not a lot of money and it looks pretty amazing. Also, I have seen some Sporting Life "Plug Tobacco" Series cards on eBay. What exactly are they?

Ole buddy,
I hate to still admit it but this old dinosaur prof still can't scan. I know it's kinda pitiful since i've been on this board heading toward 9 years or so.
My wife did manage to get someone at her school to scan a couple of things for me over the years for Scott F and Craig D's websites---both framed pieces.
I actually sent Jon C some pictures of a couple of the walls a year or two back
and that's been about it.
But thanks for askin'.
all the best and Happy 4th.
Barry

I've said for the last 10 years that the M116 Sporting Life card set is not only visually very pleasing but has a great deal of room for growth. Now that the T213 Coupon cards are finally starting to appreciate in price as are the T207 scarce back cards, it's about time for the 3rd undervalued and underappreciated set to take off. It's not close to where it should be, still a great buy, especially those tough, scarce cards which rarely appear for sale....

T206Collector 06-28-2012 03:41 AM

I tried, but won't collect them because there are way too many high grade examples out there given distribution practices. As a result, to me, a mid-grade example looks poor. Just cuz i am used to seeing all those sparkly white borders and sharp corners.

IMHO this is not a set that is "under valued" or likely to take off any time soon.

More like Fan Craze, where top condition is expected.

But they are beautiful!

Kzoo 06-28-2012 08:32 AM

The backs!!

IMO, the fronts of these cards are nice, but the backs with the 'Sporting Life' advertisements are the best part and some of the coolest ads on any cards out there...........Matt

barrysloate 06-28-2012 08:59 AM

Just looked at this thread....I remember those Barry.:)

These pics are for Peter, who prefers the M116 Johnson image to its T206 portrait counterpart.

Can someone kindly tell me if my understanding is correct (or not) that these are the only two ad backs the M116 WaJo can be found with? Thanks in advance.
Val

atx840 07-02-2012 03:45 PM

Love them, I have one blank back...do those count as I've heard SGC won't grade them as authentic?

ullmandds 07-02-2012 03:52 PM

nice Val...and thanx!!!! I love the detail of the uni and of WaJo's face...

From the M116 master recently published on this site, yes Val - those are the only two backs for WaJo.

While my Cobb is not quite as nice as Calvindog's - I still love it! I picked these two up during the last REA auction.

Beautiful cards guys!!! I really think it's a great set! Cool portraits... lots of funky old collars and ties! Some genuine rarities... high-grade cards are plentiful...great set!!

big80s 07-10-2012 01:30 PM

Wow!

They might be cheap in comparison to others, but this is certainly a strong finish for a PSA 3 - m116 Honus Wagner (pastel) - PSA 3

Same type card sold 4-5 mos ago for half of that. That price was really, really high for that card in today's climate.

Seems like there's a volatile market for these cards, I guess.

Careful! You may be struck down by lightning for posting such heresy here.

chaddurbin 07-10-2012 03:01 PM

they've always been on the cheap side. they vary in sizes so much from the factory the difference between a trimmed and 8 is so subjective.

If anyone is interested, I have a nice SGC 40 which I'd sell for considerably less.
