T206 n00b
 

Hi All!

I'm new to Net54. I've been collecting Post War Vintage and Modern most of my life, and now want to add some T206's to my collection. I've always been intrigued by the set, but have only been doing research on them for a short time. My first collecting goal is to put together NY Highlander, Jersey City Skeeters, and Newark Indians team "sets" in a low grade.

Any advice for a n00b T206 collector?

My advice would be to try and find larger lots on ebay... that have several of the cards you want... buy the lot... and sell off the cards you dont want.. that way you get to keep the ones you did want for a reasonable price.

Stay focused. As the hobby goes on it is easy to desire other cards and deplete funds you have. It never fails that's when the unbeatable deal for the cards you want comes up but you just spent your funds on something else.

Welcome! Seems like we are in the same boat kinda. I've been collecting Pre War for a number of years now, and really have dove into the T206 set recently. Warning: they are addictive! I only buy them graded by PSA, and in mid to low grade condition. It'll take years, but someday I'll have the full set. Good luck with the hunt!

There's a lot of T206 collectors on this board, and a whole lot of interesting threads about the set. Use the search function of the board and look forward to hours, days, weeks and months of reading. T206 is known as the "gateway" to other prewar; that was the case for myself, and for many others here. Enjoy, and be careful!

I'm sick of being a slave to the PSA set registry, so I've put most of that on hold to dive into this for a while.

I haven't bought any yet, and I've gone back and forth between wanting to buy them graded or raw. The main reason (for me) to buy graded is the obvious. I don't want to buy fakes. All of my graded cards to this point are in PSA holders, but I think if/when I buy a graded T206 it will be in a SGC holder (I like the way they look in them). The main reason to buy raw is because I want to learn about the card through handling the actual card. Get the feel of them, and look at them unobstructed with a loop etc..

I suppose I could buy one or two low dolllar cards that are graded authentic, or 1, and crack them out to get the look/feel of the cards themselves.

The two ways that I've read about spotting fakes are: Names are in brown ink, black ink means it's a fake. Also the first letter of the city must be larger than the rest of the letters in that same word.

Does that sound right, and does anyone else have any other tips about spotting bogus cards?

Fake T206 are easy to pick out once you have put a real one in your hands. There are a few real high end fakes that are harder to tell but you usually only see them in expensive cards. PM me your address and I will get you started with your first card.

T206 is a fabulous set, with all the way you can collect it.

When you start work on t206 you simply cant stop, it is a verry fun set to collect and a lot of real t206 expert here to learn a lot about the set.

And be sûre to post your progress on the thread the Monster Number.

Welcome to the board! Previous posters have all given some excellent tips and links to good T206 resources. I would add that the Buy/Sell/Trade section here at Net54 is a great place to pick up some T206's, from very low grade to very high grade, and be assured that you are getting authentic cards. Somebody selling fakes would not be around for very long at all. I think I speak for the vast majority of the people who use the B/S/T in saying that I have had overwhelmingly positive interactions and deals there and never had the slightest doubt that anything I bought or traded for was the real deal.

Thanks everyone for all the advice.

I've been reading a lot about the T206s on the web sites that have been recommended, and some members have PMd me advice as well. Also using the search feature to read a lot of old threads. Good stuff!

A BIG thanks to the 3 members who are each sending me a card free of charge. They've been advertised as beaters, but I still can't wait to get them. 2 of the 3 I don't which player is being sent, and for me that adds excitement. I'll post pics when the cards arrive.

I haven't yet pulled the trigger on any cards, but my trigger finger is itchin'. Checked out some scans that were sent, and waiting on a few more to come in. Also trying to do some research on pricing.

My advice for buying cards would be to start slowly and just bid on ebay and buy cards here on the BST. Keep a watch list on ebay of cards in your price range that you like, and put in some bids that u think are a little too low. You'll be outbid most of the time, but you'll get a good feel for the current value of the cards. And sometimnes you'll get a nice deal. Try to keep enough liquid cash around that you could afford to win a few auctions at the same time if the price is right. This approach will help you keep your budget in check, while still being involved in collecting. Try not to get too attached to any card up for auction. With T206, there will always be another one to bid on. Good luck, and you definitely came to the right place.

My first two!
 

This afternoon I was pleased to find my first two T206's in my mailbox.

Both we sent to me FREE by generous members.

Thank you Bruce (Texxxx) for the Engle, and thank you Erick (T206Hound) for the McIntyre. They are both cool cards, and I will study them. I like how one has paper loss on the back , and the other has it on the front. I think these are both great learning cards, and I will do just that with them.

First purchase, and a couple questions
 

I recently made my first purchase on the BST forum. Low grade Jack Knight Portrait. Great card, great price, really happy with it. I've since picked up another card which is on the way, and I have my eye on a few more.

Couple questions

Does anyone know who the last living T206 Subject was?
I recently read that Paddy Livingston died in '77. Did any of the others outlive him?

Also, I was checking out some SGC graded T206's, and I noticed that on Old Mill cards it's listed as 1909-1911. On the other brands (the ones I've seen anyway) the specific year is listed. Is this because Old Mill put out the same card all three years while other brands put out different cards each of the years. Just wondering.

Hall of Famer Rube Marquard lived until June 1st, 1980.

SGC uses the notation to distinguish between backs that contain the 150, 350 and 460 series destination. It's not an indication of year, just which flavor of back the card has.

Marquard & Livingston: The Last Two Surviving Members of T206
 

The last two survivors from the T206 set were Paddy Livingston (d. 9/19/1977) and Hall of Famer Rube Marquard (d. 6/1/1980). Featured in this photograph during their playing days, it is interesting to note that because they each played in different leagues at this time, this photo was probably taken during the 1911 World Series. Ironically Livingston did not participate in the World Series, at least not on the field. Moreover, while Marquard was a rising star of the National League – the 24-year old Marquard started two games for the Giants in the 1911 World Series, recording 8 strikeouts over 11.2 innings pitched and an ERA of 1.54 – Livingston was not a particularly noteworthy player for the World Champion Athletics – he hit just .239 over 71 at bats for the A’s that season and did not play in the World Series. It is thus curious to wonder why a photographer would decide to capture their photograph together. It is almost as if the photographer held the key to the players’ longevity – that somehow he knew that these two players would be the last surviving members of the legendary T206 set.

Dutch Jordan (12-23-1972)

Al Shaw (12-30-1974)
Paddy Livingston (09-19-1977)
Rube Marquard (06-1-1980)

These are, not surprisingly, also the most common signatures to find on T206 cards; excepting Pattee, Bush, Jordan and Shaw. There are known signatures of Bush on T206 cards, but I've never even heard of a signed Pattee, Jordan or Shaw. It is likely that the relative scarcities of those T206 cards (if not the difficulty in tracking those players down) is why there are none known to exist.

I strongly recommend listening to the audio of Glory of the Times. It is really good...Marquard and Davy Jones are interviewed and bother are very interesting.

I am sure there were a few of the southern leaguers that lived into
the 1970's but there is not alot of info on where and when they were born and where and when they died.

Dutch Jordan is included in my list above. I think it may be comprehensive. A lot of SL'ers had at least a cup of coffee in the Majors, and thus are researchable on Baseball-Reference.com. For example, Dolly Stark died in 1924:

I recently picked up my first two slabbed T206's, and my first non Piedmont backs. I also bought a raw George Washington Merritt from a fellow board member on the BST forum.

I'm enjoying some of the great T206 threads on the board. Most of the discussions are way above my pay grade, but I feel that I'm taking something away from each of them. Each time I read something new about T206 (which is most things for me) I become more intrigued with the set. At the same time, the more I read, the more I feel like I've fallen down the rabbit hole....and I have no idea how deep it goes! :)
