1919 Reds - Chief Bender
 

So here's a question for 1919 Black Sox autograph collectors: in your 1919 Reds collection, do you include Chief Bender on your list? He was a base coach for the 1919 team for a short while. If someone was on the regular season roster as a coach or player, they are on my want list; but I have never seen Bender included on anyone's list in that way, nor have I felt the need to add him. What do you think?

Steve, are you sure he coached for the Reds in 1919? I have not found any info on this, which may not be unusual since sometimes determining the full coaching staff on some of these older teams in kinda tough. I don't find him coaching until later in the 20's.
To answer your question though, I try to collect everyone that played, managed, coached, owned etc on a team. If it's a HOF'er like Bender, then even better. I even group George Sisler with the 60 pirates since he was a special assistant.

I agree with mike. in fact its almost better not to know so you dont drive yourself crazy looking for someone, though a 1919 reds collector would find ten benders before he ever found a stahl or moran.
