Are they the same person?

This has probably been discussed before, but I searched the archives and found nothing. Are Art Phelan and Jimmy Phelan the same person? When you compare the T206 Jimmy Phelan to the C46 Art Phelan, they look like the same person. It even looks like the same photo. Are they the same person?

Image certainly appears to be the same.

As far as the person being the same, given that both cards id the same team, it seems like a reasonable thing to believe.

A (very) quick look on baseball-reference yields only one Phelan to have played with Providence from 1909-1912...but it's neither Jimmy or Art Phelan.

No idea what that means...

Here is a thread about it and I can answer Tom Hufford's question in it(5 years too late) about the John Phelan from Harrison. I can say with certainty that he wasn't the baseball player because his grandson John is my dad's first cousin and his grandpa didn't play baseball

My last name being Phelan I did a little research on these two a few years back, hoping I at least had relatives who could hit and catch the ball. Yes, both the C46 & T206 seem to be the same individual, Jimmy Phelan (who played for Providence). Arthur Phelan if I remember correctly was related to a sheriff in Illinois, and played his ball in Chicago and Cincinnati (never in Providence). Here is a photo of Art Phelan in Chicago. Jimmy and Art were not directly related.

If looking for James Phelan in U.S. census records, good luck, seems as though the Phelan clan all had a relative named James, but I would suggest looking in Massachusetts rather than Rhode Island. What interested me further.... was either person related to James Dickson Phelan who had a cup of coffee in the majors in the mid-1880's?
