Girls! Girls! Girls!
Not looking to turn Net54 into a dating site....but are there any female members??
Is Net54 the "Augusta National" of card sites?? |
|
I saw the title and thought three things;
1) This was going to be a thread about a heavy metal song or band. 2) This was going to be a thread about an Elvis movie. 3) This was going to be a thread about women on baseball cards and ephemera. David |
Joann used to post here often but has been scarce lately. She collects female baseball material among other things. There was one other about a decade ago but cannot remember her name...

There have been some posting, usually asking for info about family members that played.

My wife frequently checks the board, but I doubt she has ever posted anything.

That's her, Barry. I had just recalled her name and was going to post it. She was on the west coast, knew a right smart about tobacco cards and Japanese baseball cards.
Both of the ladies mentioned brought civility to the board. We'd all be better off if they were here with us now. |
Barry,
You are correct...Julie was the other one...both were class acts...Joann still collects and is active on at least one more board I belong to... Joshua |
Joshua, Barry S., Frank W.
Julie V.---now that brings back memories of many great folks from the ancient times.
If I remember correctly, she had quite the collection and sold most of it some years back. all the best, barry |

I'm not sure how many women are on the boards, but I owe my mother a ton for driving me all over the northeast from the time I was 10 until I could drive. I can't imagine how many books she's read sitting at shows.

Great to see your tribute to mom. Thank God for moms. As I get older, I appreciate my mom more. My wife never stops talking about her recollection of her mom. I remember going to the National in 1992 or 1993(in Atlanta) and seeing 2 girls going from one table to another checking out cards. It seemed so out of place. Should be more common. I am still around - just not as active posting here as I used to be. I have started my own law firm while still consulting for my former company, and it does keep me busy. Thank you Marty, Clayton and Frank for your kind comments. I really appreciate it.
I am definitely still collecting the female image photos and have recently revived my prior type collection of Detroit players from sets issued 1887 through ~1915. And believe me, if I win one of the items I have my eye on in REA, I will be posting that here, there, everywhere, far and wide - soap opera boards, foreign culture boards, any board I can find! :) Julie V was around until about 5-7 years ago when she sold her entire collection. It was a breathtaking collection, and to this day I regret not buying something - anything - from it. She had to be the #1 female vintage bb card collector of all time, and I think the rest of us put together would still not be in her league. A few of my faves ... http://photos.imageevent.com/ltsgall...male100772.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/ltsgall...nts0607195.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/ltsgall...0500%20_2_.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/ltsgall...rly0509225.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/ltsgall...BC350Unk09.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/ltsgall...omen101133.jpg J |

Hi all--I am also interested of images of women baseball players (or baseball cards) from the nineteenth century. Am writing a book on the subject for the University of Illinois Press. Deb Shattuck

Hello Joann
Beautiful images. Not seen them before. |
Deb!
Good to see you. I have a PM in my mailbox right now that I have not had a chance to respond to but thought might be of interest to you. Someone here has photos of ancestors (female) in bb uniforms. He knows who they are but not the team. I immediately thought of you and your interest in players. I will call his attention to your post. I have added several items to my collection since we met. I may even have found the list of items we discussed. :-) For all on Net54, Deb is writing what will probably be the defnitive book on female vintage bb teams. She is traveling the country as time is available researching teams and players. She immediately identified several photos and people from my collection that had me mystified and even had, at her fingertips, articles and references from newspapers of the time to people in my cabinets and PC's. It was amazing. Deb and her mom came to Grand Rapids, and we had the most delightful visit and dinner. We met at the library, and the only place where we could talk was the children's area, which was empty. It was sort of comic - we sat on tiny chairs that were about a foot high around a short table enthusiastically comparing notes on everything from my photos to her research to a Bloomer Girl billboard that appears in a Mickey Mouse/Steamboat Willie short! Good times. Any help anyone can give her would certainly go to a good cause. Deb - hope all is well with you. J |
Andy, I don't think I know where the North End team is from. It's one of my favorites though, between the smoking and the Who reference (5:15!) :) I don't think it was postally used. I know some people don't like anything on the backs of their PC's, but I always hope mine are postally used because the postmark is often the only slight tiny bit of info I have as to where it might be from. I also have 3 that have writing that makes it clear that the sender is one of hte people in the picture on the front.
Thanks again for the kind words all. The magazine is awesome. And I'm glad you are working on your misprints Johnny - those were some detailed threads on the printing process for sure! J |
Joann those are some awesome photos. The Female Giants photo the catcher has a ginormous glove! Also the Women's team photo in dresses in the studio, i love them ring bats, great stuff thanks!
|
Deb,
Good luck with your book. I look forward to reading it when it comes out. JimB |
Hey There Joann,
Missed your Character Building Intellectual Posts, Truly! I've owned & seen some Women Player cards & PC's over the years... and I just now had a thought... I just realized that some of the healed shoes they use to wear must of been murderous on their feet! Or maybe the Heals were just for the Photo shoots? They do seem to dress up a bit more for what would seem a formal shoot, vice the closer to the field photo's... Whattya think, Any thoughts? |

Hi Joann,
Good to see you posting! Like many others, I always enjoyed your viewpoint on many threads. RC |
Deb and Joann
Hey Deb and Joann,
Glad to see you delightful ladies posting. It adds another dimension to the board that we are sorely missing. Joann- great looking items as always. Hope you are well. kind regards |
Joann and Deb
Thanks Joann, don't be a stranger;)
Welcome Deb:) |
I'll second what everyone else said. I always felt Joann's posts were among the best on the board. I'm sure having your own law firm takes up all of your time, but hope you can squeeze a little Net54 into your schedule.
Regards, Barry |
Neat cards Joann, and good luck with REA auction(s).
Deb, the book sounds like an enjoyable project for you, and will be a good read for us. Thanks Joann and Deb for commenting here; Hope y'all continue to do so. |
Ladies! Ladies! Ladies!
With absolutely no disrespect to our female contributors, I think Smoky has revealed the lecherous instinct of this Board with his title Girls!Girls!Girls!.;)
With nearly 2000 views in 48 hours I ask the gentlemen of the Board what they expected to find in this thread?:) Would there have been fewer hits with the title of my response? Perhaps.:D:D |
