August 16,1861 baseball
I posted this yesterday in the memorabilia section, but since I am grasping at straws, let me post here too.
Sometime within the last 15 years there was up for auction, a baseball dated August 16, 1861 and also the teams and final score written on it. I kick myself for not going all-out to get it. Why? Because this game was played on my birthday-BUT exactly 100 years before I was born. One of those things that haunts me for passing it up. If anyone knows of this ball's where-abouts......let me know if it may be for sale. |
Not the answer exactly, but there's writeups here on a (fake) ball from August 17, 1858, and a (real? maybe?) ball from October 21, 1861, sold at Legendary in 2002 for $58K.

Tomman1961, I have twin sons who were born exactly 10 years after you were born. And, my second marriage was on August 16, 1997!

Conversely, two American icons passed away on August 16. The Babe in 1948. Elvis in 1977.
