I'm surprised to see what looks like a jersey number of the sleeve of the player in your photo. Supposedly, Cleveland became the first team to use numbers in 1916. Here's a photo that's clipped out of an old baseball guide. When I picked it up, I was told it was from 1911. I doubt the numbers here correspond to the number of the sleeve. Maybe this will help ...

In the team photo, several of the sleeve numbers are visible. Check out the player on the far left of the top row. Not only does he appear to have a "7" on his sleeve, but he also bears some resemblance to the player in your photo. His name is Gus Hetling and he batted right handed. He was the Oaks' regular third baseman during that era and he has a few cards as well, including an Obak and a Zeenut. What do you think?

That's a 1912 team photo (from the 1913 Spalding Guide). The number does match Hetling. There is one Zeenut that shows him in profile, but it doesn't help much. I would only say that it can be him.

I love action shots. This is a cool image.

First, a thanks to you guys that have chimed in....

As for the sleeve number, I have yet to receive the photo but it seems to
be "mock-up" for publication of some sort.

I will look over the team pic to see if I could guesstimate.

Thx again!!!!

Mark

Also, if anyone is interested - the seller has another photo:

Although both pics are rough in shape, PCL pics this early are very difficult to come by, and at such an affordable price.

Note: The numbers on the sleeves of both the batter and catcher.

Mark

That is to say the least more useful than the one I posted. Nice find.
