Is this the T206 original photo of Irv Young?

I recently picked up this supplemental that was issued in the Minneapolis Tribune. It measures about 10" by 4.5" and has a blank back. Very similar to the T206 of Irv Young, with some differences. What do you think? Is it the photo used to make the T206?

Your supplemental is a close match to Irv's T206. Especially when you compare them side-by-side.

I would say yes, but thats just my opinion.

Either way its a neat piece. Nice pick-up!

Just out of curiosity, what does the print say in the black box on your supplemental?

I don't think it's the same shot. Check out Cy Young's e97. I believe that's the same image as the t206 ...

Chris, you threw me off when you posted "Cy Young", but now I see what you're talking about. They are all similar for sure.

My Irv Young T206 for comparison. I'd say yes, your photo was used for the his T206 (facial expression is spot on)..................

The print at the bottom reads "Compliments of the Minneapolis Trubune."

Looks the same to me. Especially how you can see his left ear just a bit in the photo as you can on the card. Nice Supplement Mark!

And Tim, I love the colors on the T206. Great background!

Thanks......

Thanks Rob........yes, that's why I purchased that particular Irv Young T206: the colors & registration are exeptional. :)

I wonder how far we'd get if we started a thread and everyone tried to post any of the original images used for the T206 set...

I still say the supplement and the T206 are two different photos. It's my belief the T206 image was taken while Irv Young was playing for Boston (NL) in 1907. Check out the scans below. The E97 (which depicts Irv, not Cy) shows Irv wearing a uniform that matches Boston's in '07. Now check out the collar and the belt on the T206 and compare them to the E97. It's a perfect match. The collar is much different on the supplement and the belt doesn't look the same either. Also, if the T206 artist was working with the supplement and not the E97 photo, why didn't he trace over the existing letters? Instead, he did a sloppy job painting the letters over the Boston jersey. Irv Young, by the way, was also known as "Young Cy," which might explain why Cy's name ended up on the card. I'm curious why collectors consider this card to depict the older "Cy." He didn't join Boston (NL) until 1911 and the E97s came out a year or two earlier ...

I agree with Chris. The collar is a lot different in the photo, than on the card. I don't think the T206 artist would have altered the collar like that.

Also, the hat angle is a little off and I don't think the artist would have adjusted that in his painting. It is still a very cool photo, though!

Chris makes a very strong case. I am convinced that he is correct. Still, it's interesting how similar they are.

+1

I guess I'm going to retract my first opinion and go with my second opinion after seeing how Chris lined up his ducks.

So it appears that Irv's E97 & T206 are by-products of one photo and the Tribune supplemental is a by-product of another photo.

Thanks Chris

Guys, the original photo should be identical to the Cy Young E97 card. Similar to but different than the Minneapolis image.

Apologies for resurrecting the dead thread but wanted to add this info for anyone else looking for info on these images like I just was :) .

I dunno. Did he always stand exactly like that with the same fixed expression?
I think both artistic renderings are derived from that photo. Just my opinion. Rob

Irving was quite statuesque.
