Hobbies magazine articles, Burdick - 1935-1938
As far as I am aware this is the first time Jefferson Burdick wrote about cigarette cards. This article is from the venerable and popular magazine, Hobbies- December, 1935. It was written approximately 4 yrs before the predecessor to the American Card Catalog, the US Trade Card Collectors Catalog, was written by him. Burdick, near the end of this writing, is contemplating doing a catalog to help collectors with a numbering system etc.. I hope folks interested in the history of our hobby will enjoy this glimpse into the beginnings of the organized hobby as we know it today, as much as I did. Thanks too, to George Vrechek's work in this area of studying the hobby. Much of what I have learned has been from his work on the subject.

Thanx for posting. Already by the time of the article, the big tobacco brands we see on our card backs were dead and/or dying, other than Fatima and Helmar, says Burdick. Makes me wonder why that is...Camel have been around since the 1910's and Marlboro since the 20's...were Sweet Cap and Hassan just bad cigs? Anyone know?

"....a few sets should be cataloged" Burdick- Hobbies, Jan. 1936
Burdick wrote 7 articles for Hobbies magazine. I will be sharing the first 6 he wrote and am still hunting for the 7th. After all of these are posted, I will make the first one larger and then they will be archived permanently on the board, as the Egan handbook has been. Enjoy....

Leon, these are great - thanks. I like Burdick's comment in the first article about why cigarette cards were banned - probably by the "Society for the Supression of something or Other", and then the comment that "the general opinion of cigarettes is much different today."
If marijuana ever gets legalized, I would love to get involved in a venture to create baseball cards for inclusion - color lithos, of course. |

Hobbies Magazine- JR Burdick, Sept. 1937
Burdick wrote 7 articles for Hobbies Magazine. The last one being in the June 1938 Hobbies Magazine, which I don't have. This Sept., 1937 Magazine article is the last one which I was able to acquire. This one discusses misprints, errors and omissions with cards!! Is there a hotter topic in pre-war card collecting than those pesky errors and back collecting?? Once this is posted we will lock the thread in a few days and put it in our Archive Center (icon on every page, far right as you look at your screen) so future collectors and Net54baseball members can read them. best regards http://luckeycards.com/hobbies1937sept.jpg |
Great work!
I don't check in or post often, but this is great work on your part! I, for one, love the history of what Burdick accomplished and this validates his insight yet again. Thanks again!

Hobbies Magazine - June '38 - J.R. Burdick - In Old Time Cigarette Cards
The last of the articles put out by JR Burdick, for Hobbies Magazine, was in June 1938. It had to do with cigarette card collecting and collecting in general. It also pictures some nice N172s (which weren't classified as N172s at this time). He goes onto mention "cards are a sideline for most collectors". He never met some guys on this board. :)
