House of David Barnstormers on Ebay

The House of David Museum in Michigan is having a renovation and they are selling some amazing items from the 1900's - 1930's. Uniforms, pennants, signed balls, photos, signs, etc.

Some great stuff, I didn't want any true collectors to miss out.

I talked to the guy and he said the 4 uni's would be the only HOD uni's they would be sellling, but will probably be putting up a few non HOD uni's. The 1935 one, not up on Ebay but on their Site, is a replica however. I inquired about buying because it was the same kind as Grover Cleveland Alexander wore, but again he said they didn't have an original one of those, but rather a repro.

HOD played against Satchel Paige and many of the negro league teams and also played against a few of the Black Sox members as well.

Maybe a change of heart? I'm a bit shocked that they are parting with any of this stuff.

Shoeless Moe 01-01-2012 09:55 PM

I wonder if an auction house contacted them? I just emailed the seller, I'll post when they reply, most likely in the morning.

Shoeless Moe 01-01-2012 10:03 PM

Wow!!!!

reply from seller:

"They were all sold tonight to the Negro League Baseball Museum"

(The 3 remaining uniforms, the baseball cash box, some of the photos, the HOD sign, and the broadside/scorecards lots) - man they cleared 'em out of the baseball items.

HRBAKER 01-01-2012 10:11 PM

If true, I think that's great.

Vintage Baseball Uniforms

They've put up a couple more uniforms this morning. A 1928 & a different 1934 one.

They've sold the 1923, 1929, 1931, 1934, and the 1939 Canadian negro league one. The 1954 basketball one went for $1358. Amazing stuff.

I wonder if they are selling everything and closing that musuem down, rather then renovating as they originally posted.

AND the list of this stuff being sold goes on. It's really some unique and interesting things they are selling and have sold. Those guys probably had things living in their beards that they didn't even know about!!

I told them to consign to REA to maximize exposure & money, but they said they couldn't wait until May.

Only in one auction was it not made clear, and that was the 1935 G.C.A. replica one, but I asked the question and the seller put it up right away, the other replica one is the one currently up and they put it in the description from the start. All others were authentic.

As for the mention to put the stuff in REA, to heck with the rich. They don't have time to look on Ebay too friggin' bad! Although I understand u are just thinking of the seller.

I have to admit that I glossed over the "replica" part but hopefully no one seriously interested in bidding did.

Shoeless Moe 01-05-2012 12:51 PM

Highest priced one yet just went

took 1 hour.....

$1000

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-1928...item27c20d2a9b

and it was the Junior Team. The "Rich" have entered the bidding.

Updated to add: This one they do have an error in their description, they state this one went on Ebay for $4500 3 years ago, that I believe is incorrect as the one that went for $4500 was a 1918-1920.

So I hope the buyer didn't go by that.

Runscott 01-05-2012 01:37 PM

Great stuff. I have had a few email exchanges with the seller, and while I haven't yet bought a lot that we've discussed, I've certainly missed a few that if I had seen them, I would have purchased. Great deals so far, and a very friendly seller.

By the way - I think that basketball is closer to 1930's, but the opening bid seems reasonable.

Shoeless Moe 01-05-2012 02:29 PM

Seller said that was the final one

yanks12025 01-05-2012 04:41 PM

Is that 1923 a replica. Looks too new? What's the actual value of these?

I hope the 1923 is not a replica, it's the only one I won. I liked it cuz it's the oldest and the only one that has the full name of the team, rather then just the letters. The seller said they used the full name jerseys for road games and the HD, HID, HOD for their home games.

I was told by the seller prior to buying that it is not a replica and is an original. I'll attempt to confirm that when it arrives. It does like nice and white but he said it is far from very good condition. It does have a nice tear/rip/hole in the front I can see. I'll see the other defects when it arrives.

Here was the sellers description on that one:

This is a great old solid wool uniform, including pants, socks, and jersey, with the House of David logo on the front chest. The uniform seems to be in original condition. The jersey does have a few small wear marks, several holes here and there, which we tried to show in our photos. Its not in great shape, but what would you be looking like after traveling in those conditions, sometimes two or three games a day, and being almost 90 years old!

He does mention in the description of the 1934 one that the letters were repaired by a professional seamstress, but all the others are seemingly in their original condition. We'll see if anyone else here won one (or 2).

They have another lot that just went up. Love it. Never know what they will have up next.

I would put a value of close to $1K on the 1923 one, but any of these, sold alone, could have fetched that much. One clue is that they all sold almost immediately, either at BIN or negotiated price.

If the 1923 had been the only one sold, as a straight auction, it might have brought closer to $2K. We'll see soon - with so many different buyers at BIN's, some were certainly speculators.

They are real and they're spectaculor!

Just got it today. Amazing! They are kinda potato sacky, that heavy wool, how did they play in those on hot summer days????

And came with a great letter on House of David Museum letterhead, and the seller threw in a HOD book and some vintage postcards. Top seller indeed!

slidekellyslide 01-07-2012 07:41 PM

Very nice pickup...you got one heck of a deal on it too. Congrats! :)

David W 01-07-2012 08:02 PM

Link to the website.

Per wikipedia, there were only 3 House of David followers living in 2010.

Maybe the last one is cashing out the treasure trove?????

Shoeless Moe 01-07-2012 09:14 PM

Thanks

Yah the letter included is signed by the Museum owner and curator. He said in an email it's mainly due to the economy. Tough times in Michigan and elsewhere indeed.
