2011 Favorite Pick-Up

My favorite pick-up of 2011 would have to be this vibrant N173 of Dan Brouthers, a great addition to my 19th century Detroit collection. Honorable mention would go to an N172 of Cincinnati catcher Kid Baldwin shown as a Detroit pitcher (error card). This card is often mistaken to be Lady Baldwin.

Adding to the collection is proving more difficult with each passing year. Hoping 2012 will be a good year for everyone.

I already posted this in my december pick up. It is may favorite of the year, though, too.

I picked up this old judge left handed bat at 45deg King Kelly and the Harkins together. I received it in the mail the day before my wife went into labor so it got a little overshadowed. I was worried that I got it at such a good deal I thought it may be too good to be true. I then sent it off to SGC while on paternity leave and it came back at a 40. I am really excited to have it as part of my collection.

This scan is of the card before the card was graded.

Here is the Harkins that came with it:

This card came back from SGC as a 30.

I thought a "find" was a new discovery...like the louisiana find...like the skydash collection...like the nun's t206 wagner last year...not a "pick-up?"

Call me an anal retentive mo fo...but WTF? These are just "pick-ups?"

Hello,

I think this can be labeled as a find for 2011.

Before having most of the cards graded and before selling any, I scanned each and every one of the cards with the idea that I was going to create a book to preserve and document their original state and create some level of provenance.

I ended up going to Walmart.com and creating a beautiful photo book measuring 12 X 12, bound with black leather covers. Each card is full-size, full color on glossy paper with a black background. I created an intro page with a brief history of the cards and specific mention of the prior owners and how the group was passed down through the years. I also labled each card underneath with full name and nickname - Frank "Piano Mover" Smith for example, as well as a note if they were HOFers and their year of induction.

I made two copies for the seller's two adult sons and also kept a copy for myself. I know there are other places to get this type of thing done, but I was able to do it easily, quicky, relatively cheaply and with beautiful results. I would absolutely recommend that anyone who comes across any type of "find" do the same thing. You'll be glad you did.

Happy New Year and Happy Collecting,
Craig

Peter

Agreed.

I meant find as best pick up, but due to possible confusion, I will go ahead and change caption.

Brian, where on earth did you find the O'leary and Mitchell cards? Oleary is obviosly trimmed but a tough find. Mitchell isnt easy either. Are they both blanked backed?

Kmac

Brian Van Horn 12-30-2011 01:16 PM

Gentlemen,

Thank You for the compliments.

Kmac,

I picked up both Koesters of Mitchell and O'Leary on eBay for BINs one Friday morning and passed on the Brown from the same set. Yes, they are blank backed which I realize is redundant for Koesters.

kmac32 12-30-2011 01:27 PM

Very nice. Dont know how I missed them, but good for you. I picked up the Brown from Rhett. Very tough set

Runscott 12-30-2011 01:31 PM

John, Imagine what you could acquire if you had a decent card-budget to work with!

Ahhh, the famed '?' Speaker :p

Given that I was quite excited once I got started collecting again, I quickly picked up many of my old favorites.

But the top non-photo pick-up was this T3, my favorite card of all-time:
