T206 Cy Young...Any reservations?
I am traveling and a friend of mine who normally sells only shiny stuff asked me about the authenticity of this card:
http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/e...Youngfront.jpg http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/e.../youngback.jpg Mostly, I like it. Here's the things that give me enough pause to submit it to this proud assembly for further review: 1) I have only a couple Sovreigns, none of them here, therefore I have no basis for comparison. I have handled hundreds of raw T206s, but my experience with this brand is minimal. 2) I originally didn't like the way the background looked, but have come to peace with it after a little internet research. The green sometimes has yellow show through. 3) I found a few Youngs with the 350 subject back, not many with the 150 back 4) the surface has a tad less "tooth" that some t206s...it certainly isn't glossy by any means, but has a very slightly discernible smoothness to it that Piedmonts don't. It is very slight..almost to the "i might be thinking too much" point. Thoughts? My lack of experience with S150s and the lack of a comparison are the main things that give me pause. |
Looks fine to me.

Great looking Cy. How much?

authentic, very easy to tell
nice card! T206 cards are fairly easy to authenticate in order to get a clean reprint the printers would crop the image area and add a new caption to a new blank white border... the caption font and sometimes the border width will give them away. On some older reprints the printer just rescreened the entire card but these will have print dots in the normally pure white border and the caption will be duller and not as crisp in details. The only fakes that may fool an expert (in an auction listing or on internet) because they are exact copies from an image of an authentic card... is a homemade fake made on an inkjet printer (front and back printed out and glued together), but in person these would stand out as obvious fakes. |
Everything about it looks correct.

As others have stated, it is definitely authentic.
I'd valued it around $650. |
I think it looks legit, nice card.
|
I agree with most of what's above. It's authentic. The cut looks slightly askew. Great back. I have a slabbed Young portrait that I haven't broken out, and I'd swap it for that Sovereign Young. Nice card, hope you get it.

Christmas came early for me. I did end up picking the Young up, which is fine as I have needed one for my set. I ended up paying $400 plus I got a dog T206 Piedmont Bender Trees thrown into the deal. Appreciate the help from everyone. I did not walk into the shop with any hope of finding anything the least bit exotic or any intention of spending that much money...but sounds like I saved money tomorrow by spending it today. But I guess that's why we walk into shops.

Nice deal. If you want to trade it, I have a beautiful mint game unused Florida Marlins baseball cap that might interest you.

Todd
I just got home and saw you phone message. You called earlier today regarding this CYoung card.
Anyhow, I have a T206 CYoung (portrait) card with SOVEREIGN 150. And, it's exactly like yours. So, I say DITTO to everything all the prior posters have said here. A very Merry Christmas to you ole buddy. TED Z |
Glad to report I am out of the fitted cap business...the last load went to the Nicaragua on a mission trip for players for local teams...because it there's anything a baseball player on the equator needs, it's a wool hat. :)
Hey Ted, I'll likely come up and see you the next Philly show. I have a potential client in Hershey which will get me into that area a couple times a year if it bears fruit. |

I don't want to hijack this thread.. But did anyone see this Young portrait on eBay?
http://www.ebay.com/itm/CY-YOUNG-POR...#ht_2610wt_922 I actually bought an Evers from this seller and he was very pleasent to deal with, however I couldn't bring myself to bid it. I suspect it's authentic, but was there anything else worth worrying about? Trim or any other alteration? If not, I'm bummed I didn't make an offer for it. Any feedback appreaciated. Thanks |
coming from someone who bought the card today and is very happy, this may sound off, but there will always be a next Young Portrait. It is an expensive card, but one you will almost always be able to find...getting the right price is the problem. Just takes some patience. The one on you site one ebay looked nice...but there will be another one. There's one closing tomorrow without a bid that looks worth the money to me.

The bottom appears to be trimmed. Still a nice card. |
Thanks for the feedback both!

I agree there will always be another Young. I couldn't sleep yesterday morning so I thought I'd check ebay to see if anyone listed cards on Christmas eve. Didn't think I'd find anything but low and behold, I had to take a chance from this low feedbacker.

I had seen that one too. Was thinking about it, but was happy to pay the little bit extra for the Sovreign. When I used to own a shop we had FOUR identical grade Cy Young portraits...somehow all four got away from me (in all fairness, that was 15 years ago).
