Those crazy T206 backs
Congrats to the consignors and winners in the Goodwin Auction last night. Those T206 backs amazed me again. I wasn't really surprised at the number one lot, even though at 57k+ it might be a record for all but a Uzit - Cobb, but the other ones, especially the Broadleaf 350s were really strong too. Will the backs continue going up? Other prices were fairly strong too so that seemingly bodes well for the hobby.

WOW!
Those are some crazy numbers for backs! My personal opinion is that high prices for backs are going to start coming down in the near future. I have been collecting T206 for almost 6 years now and back then I bought several mid-level backs (Sovereign 460, Cycle 460, Tolstoi) with little to no premium added for the back. For example, 6 years ago, I purchased the following cards: ALL SGC50 and ALL SOVEREIGN 460: Pfeffer - $56.00 Hummel - $56.00 Ball - $56.00 Camnitz - $ 56.00 And a Tolstoi, Bill Bergen, Catching in SGC50 for only $80.00 Recently, 6 years later, I had to pay $120.00 for a Sheckard, SGC50, Sovereign 460. That is Double what I paid for the same backs 6 years ago. I think some collectors get caught up in what's the hottest fad now. Mid-Level to Rare T206 backs are definitely hot. But, I have seen (here on Net54) many collectors that have bought a somewhat tough back (Hindu for example) only to see them put it right back up for sale when the idea that they may have paid $400+ for a card with a somewhat tough back just doesn't do it for them. Collecting backs in T206 is tough. Some people are definitely devoted to it, but some just hop in on what's hot only to find out a month later that they would much rather have a mid-grade HOFer than a Hindu back. I think you will see this latest fad start to regress this year. But what the heck do I know? |
Strong prices, indeed. I'll stick to my Sweet Cap backs and maybe spring for a Factory 649 overprint if I wanna splurge.

Congrats to Bill. Those prices are very strong.
I took an early stab at the Uzit but PSA 8 is just not my game I'll leave that to the big boys. The BL350's have been on fire this past year I was shocked the AB Bender didn't go for more I thought that was a good buy. Once again congrats to the winners and to Bill and the team. Cheers, John |
Yes, some strong prices for the T206's. I think my favorite item was the lot of 100 T209's, pretty good deal on some tough cards.

T206 Crawford PSA 8 in goodwin Auction
The T206 Crawford PSA 8 was in the Goodwins Auction last night Lot # 1 . I don't know how to attach from that site. Final bid over $ 57K.
My question is : How can a card exist from the T206 set in this condition (PSA 8)? How was it stored since 1909 ( over 100 years ) and never get a ding etc on it ? |

How about merging all the T206 threads together? The board is starting to look like the net54 T206 Forum.

I think the main page would look cleaner if all the T206 questions were combined in one thread, at least all similar ones, such as those pertaining to the rare backs. If, for example, you have a question about Red Hindus, and you see a thread already going about tough backs, just piggyback on that one. We don't need a new thread every time somebody has yet another T206 question. Just my grouchy perspective.

Numerically challenged
I hadn't clicked the link until After I read about an 8 fetching 57k...
Now i must remind you that i'm a mid-low grade, t205 kinda guy, but I figured that meant you get at least 8 expensive UZIT cards, not just one. If the rare backs are going through the roof, why don't the Sweet Caps and Piedmonts (of which there are thousands) drop significantly? Gimme a Lajoie portrait with a common back on the cheap , people! Or even a Crawford because i traded mine years ago for peanuts. Congrats to the consignor (who must have never touched the card with his hands) but made big bucks by selling at the right time! Wow... |
I sold all of my small collection of T206s recently for a couple of reasons, but the main reason being that the set is so super popular. When I first became interested in the set, I felt like I was going in my own direction, apart from the mainstream (having first collected modern 1970+ cards long ago). Now T206 feels like the mainstream (maybe I read this board too much? :))! I still haven't decided which direction I want my baseball card collection to go in next, but I just like being different.

T206 Back Premiums
EPDG = 3-5X
Brown Hindu = 10-20X Broad Leaf 350 = 30-40X It's getting spendy out there in T206 back land. |

That said, I certainly am not knocking anyone else's taste or collecting preferences. I just prefer stuff a little rarer, a little more oddball. I'm sure a lot of 206 collectors would think my stuff is junk :D Collect what you love! Chris |
Im with Barry and Chris :)
In my eyes, even the very rare T206 backs are common... compared to what a type collector seeks Broadleaf 460 or Drum back... pfft ;) ......common compared to a 1911 Big Eater, 1917 D350 Merchants Bakery, 1928 F50 Greiners Bakery, or W519-2-2, etc., etc. |

Hey Guys....Clayton, my boy!!
Bugsy and Daryl.....i felt the same way until i started to collect the T206 Freaks!!They are the best of both worlds:D Just if you enter the market.....get out your check book;) They are my "bizzaro" (ck spelling) T206 set......sure anyone can own a rare back t206, and they all kinda look the same(relatively speaking, don't get me wrong i love them also:cool:).....but try a Bender ghost, and things get interesting......;) |
I saw the Fred Clarke/Hindu price and couldn't believe it. It says POP of 4 but how long have they been tracking the backs? I have a Waddell, port Hindu back in PSA 3 and I can tell you right now as much as I like the card it would be gone for 2k! It also was graded before 2000 when I bought it so I know it isn't in the pop report which makes you wonder just exactly how many graded Clarke's have the hindu back but arent kept track of due to when they were graded
