I was able to pick-up the one I wanted most. :D The earliest date stamp on the back reads APR 24 1936 so this photo predates his Major League Debut of May 3, 1936. :)

When I first saw the photo, I didn't realize it. But once I saw the stampings on the back;

REVERSE

I finally figured it out! ;) But in my eyes, it doesn't diminish the beauty of the image. As you know David, us photo guys have to be more forgiving then card collectors. :)

Hmm... I wonder David. Would that be considered an error photo? :rolleyes: And if so, would it be worth ten times more? ;)

BTW... GREAT pick-ups there David. That's a terrific swinging image of Lou and the pedigree from the Baseball Magazine Archives is always nice to have.

Also, that Gehrig w/baby photo used to be in my collection. I'm very happy that it ended up in the hands of a true passionate Yankee collector!

Finally, picked up a photo from one of Henry's auctions, Joe Cronin at 16 years old............

WoW! That's a terrific photo Phil. Mr. "Rags to Riches" himself when he was still in the "Rags" stage of his life. IMO... Cronin is certainly one of the most important men to ever be a part of Major League Baseball. His accomplishments far exceed any statistic that has ever been created.

I had my eye on the George Gipp football photo that ends today. I was hoping to steal it for less than $500 but I have never seen a type 1 photo sell for so much on ebay, $3400 is QUITE hefty! Henry is a nice guy and his auctions always do well but that is crazy money.

Henry is VERY fortunate. His prices are UNreal, even on small items. He had a Mantle/Maris magazine a couple days ago, that went for like 56.00. I have had two of those in near the same shape for 10-15 over the years. Plus, the photos are NUTS.

But, its GREAT stuff and there are plenty of collectors willing to pay. Plus, he sold an item of mine once for a REALLY NICE price, so thats a good thing too.:)

That's a great TYPE 1 photograph Leon! I have one as well. :D In 10 years of intense searching for Ruth photos, yours is just the forth one that I've seen. Money well spent. ;)

That Gehrig photo descrpition (batting) is interesting. To me it looks like he's popping out based on where he and the catcher are looking, but the description on the back says he's hitting his 3rd home run. Doesn't make a difference as to how nice the photo is, but just something that struck me. Great photos either way.

I thought so, too--especially as most of his homers were line drives. But the photo was too nice to pass up.

I noticed that to, but credit to Henry, he also mentioned that in the auction description.

Some of the prices he is realizing (AGAIN) are crazy. There is some material (especially publications) that are somewhat common and he is getting 100 to 300% over what they normally sell for.

This is not an indictment of Henry, just a statement of fact (well my opinion, but I have sold some of the same items in his auctions myself).

I just don't get the fascination to ridiculous levels w some of these photos, but moreso, like Jeff said, somewhat "run of the mill" items by comparison. Henry has the Midas touch, and the bidders are paying Platinum level prices.

I think that although Henry uses the e-bay forum to host his auctions, his are actually much more like Legendary, Lelands, etc. (minus the catalogues) with comparable followings and thus many more bidders than the typical e-bay auction which equates to much higher realized prices than normal private/e-bay transactions.

Despite the inflated prices, I was able to pick up 4 nice pieces...

1. MINT Joe DiMaggio Glass Dish (he had it listed as an ashtray, but I think it's more likely a Bowl for Candies or Mints from Joe D's Restaurant

2. Yankees World Champs Pen & Pencil Set

3. Killer photo of Perez, about to tag the runner at 3rd

4. Crystal clear and razor sharp Type 1 of The Big Train

Absolutely spot on Phil. His ebay email blast is closing in on ten thousand!

And regarding the talk that Henry gets very high prices on his photos, I wish it was true! Being a long time regular consignor with Henry, I can tell you that several of my mid to high grade photos of Ruth, Gehrig, Foxx, Mays, Aaron, Koufax, Campy and more, fell far short of a fair price, FAR SHORT indeed. :(

Once again Mark, your well rounded eye and taste come shining through. Terrific pick-ups! I fell in love with that DiMaggio glass dish too, but I was saving all my dough for the DiMag Rookie photo. And it took just about my whole bankroll to win it. :eek: My collection of DiMaggio photos trails my Babe, Lou, and Mick collections by a lot! So I was not going to be denied on that photo. ;)

Your DiMaggio photo is in a whole "other league"... just an incredibly epic early image of The Clipper. That Candy Bowl was right up my alley (and more in my current price range). I thought it would go for lots more, and I was pretty surprised to win it. With all the DiMaggio Restaurant stuff out there, this was a piece I had never seen. Very happy to win it.

I agree with Jimmy and Phil here. Phil in that most, if not all, of the large collectors of photos and even memorabilia know about this auction. It is also the only auction I know of(with this sort of clientele) that ends ebay style(one shot at it). That is why you see very high prices and ones that fall between the cracks(i.e. Koufax portrait that “packs” posted was a STEAL-Your dad will enjoy!).

RE: Lou Brock photo.
Earlier it was stated of the crazy price of $400 dollars yet the same bidder wanted to snipe at $300. just $100 more?? Photo guys are very passionate collectors. If they see an image they want, it will most likely be tough to find another one. On top of that it is a rookie image used for his rookie card. Based on all of this, I am not shocked it went for $400 at all(so I guess I disagree with you on this one Phil:)).
In fact, a year or two ago I think this would have went for 4 figures. 25% variance +/- is nothing in photos at auction.


Jimmy is 100% correct that many of the Mid to high Ruth, Gehrigs. mantles etc went far less than they would have 5 years or even a year ago. David purchased that Gehrig with the child for a VERY VERY fair price for example.

MY EXPERIENCE:
I was able to pick up the image below. It is an earlier rookie image of one that sold in Legendary that went for damn near 5k march of 2010. I realize that it is not the exact same photo but there are variables of mine I like better(i.e. earlier and clearer image). I couldn't resist. It will be framed with my 1942 rookie signed GPC also shown below.

Henry is class all the way and people pay a premium for that. When I want something, I do not mind going "huge" in Yee’s auctions knowing full well I get what I pay for. Which is quality, service, knowledge and trust.

PS: Nice rookie image Jimmy. Too bad for that one other bidder or you would have STOLE it for 300ish. Which is one of my points.."only takes to to tango" in an ebay formatted auction. I know you probably had that sniped for 2k anyway so I am sure you are happy:)

Hey Ben, I thought that Koufax portrait was a steal too. Very excited to win it for my dad.

I some how managed to have some self control this year. I normally spend way too much on his vintage photos. Last year a flight attendant became quite miffed with me for bidding on my phone while in flight. However, I did manage to get this Ozzie Smith photo yesterday. I normally don't buy modern photos but was thrilled to find a style photo match for my Ozzie Smith spikes.

I've never purchased a vintage photo before, let alone a neg, but really liked the image on this one. No idea if I over paid or got a steal, but am looking forward to making some prints.

Not necessarily. The paper is made by Kodak, anyone can print anything on it themself. I used to print postcards on that paper in the '80's to send to clients.
Might be time to print up some RPPC's of that Greenberg neg ;)
