Wow, you can see the little white spot on the bill of the cap in the photo. That is cool.

Um, BEST THREAD EVER?? Thanks so much for starting this, David!! It's friggin' wonderful. And to think, that hat almost saw sunlight at Hilltop Park...but obviously saw plenty at the then-newly renovated Polo Grounds!! Just wow.

OK - call me Debbie Downer, and I have no reason to think that David's cap is not authentic. I just wanted to point out that the McHale photo is available from LoC in Hi-res, and the white spot on the bill of the cap is just a photo blemish, and anyway it's not in the right place - it's much too close to the outer edge of the bill.

There is a strong tendency for folks to see what they want to see in photos. I think I've said that before. :) At least we know that neither cap is made of straw.

Also - we can be sure that David's cap is not the one in the LoC photo. Note the bottom of the "Y" on David's cap below left - it appears relatively flat. (Actually the front view in his initial post above shows it to be somewhat convex). The bottom of the "Y" on the cap in the LoC photo, below right, shows a very distinctly concave bottom.

Don't blame me, it's the influence of that MEARS guy, Dave Grob.

Not sure you can track down this image, and even though its hard to tell, it almost looks, to me, that the bottom portion of the "Y" in the Yankees logo on the cap is more similar to yours, instead of curved. Maybe this is your hat?

I totaly agree with you!
In this new era of "photo match" to "insure authenticity", many people are quick to say they have a match when one element in the photo appears to look like thier item.
