When I received the photo, I followed my own rules of i.d.'ing players:
  1. Use my eyeballs. Yes, it looks like Walter Johnson (to me)
  2. Does it make sense? No. The photo is of a player in a non-ML uni, probably taken in the '20s. Wrong time period.
  3. No need to go further.

If it had been a photo from prior to Johnson's ML days, then I would have blown up the image and compared features to other known Johnson images. If it still looked like him, I probably would have then sent a copy to Hank. I would have followed the above steps, even if I had been told by the seller that it was Walter Johnson.

Same for the photo on the right - it's from the 1880's. If it had been the correct time period, it's still too small and fuzzy to make any determinations.

That's a pretty remarkable resemblance to the 19 or 20-year-old Walter c. 1907-1908. If I had reason to believe it was him, I don't think I would question it. If I had a scanner, or was into this century technology-wise, I could send you a pic or two that would look pretty amazing side-by-side with
yours. Then we could go to work on the ears!

Well, I would love to hear that it's him. I looked at it long and hard, but to me the uniforms and the photo itself looked 1920-ish.

Tell me I'm wrong - I want to believe :)

Scott,
It's not him. I just realized the arms aren't long enough. Walter's were almost freakish. Strong resemblance otherwise, though, face and body. You can rest easy now.
Hank

(Hey Leon, what's going on with the quote function, or is it me? I thought I just had to hit quote to get it into the blue.)
