'52 Topps Mantle - SGC 80 - thoughts???

Hey everyone - was curious what your thoughts are on this Mantle?...given an 80/6 by SGC, currently up for auction...potential value / range??

Wow! that is a very nice card for the grade. If it were mine, I would try to bump it. I don't think it would look out of place in 6.5 (realize SGC don't offer that grade) or maybe even a 7 holder.

If I had to call the closing price, I'd guess around $25,000.

taborton101 10-27-2011 12:16 PM

Yeah, I'd agree it could possibly get the 6.5-7 grade...looks like 1 of the edges is touched just slightly...if not for that, guessing the grade would be a bump or two up...very nice 6 though at the least...

That looks like a slight rough cut to me (if we're looking at the same thing). I kind of like rough cuts. It let's me know the card hasn't been trimmed. If you plan on bidding on that card, Good Luck! Let us know if you win.

taborton101 10-27-2011 01:07 PM

Yup, pretty sure we're lookin' at the same thing...slightly rough cut on the one side...interesting how it still is well-centered...and agreed the cut shows there's no trimming...nice, natural look...will be interesting to see what bids start looking like...

sycks22 10-27-2011 03:52 PM

I would crack it and send it to those clowns who authenticated the T206 wagner and get a 12

taborton101 10-27-2011 04:28 PM

What do you guys think about the comparative value of the Type I vs. Type II??...this is a Type I...earlier print I believe...perhaps more valuable than the Type II?...opinions on this topic? (I happen to like the Type I a bit better...seems more tidy w/ the full black box around the logo, etc....the background blue seems more vibrant too on Type I, at least to me)...

It's a nice card for sure. Good luck if you decide to make a run at it! :)

Thanks, Doug...currently no bids yet, so we'll see how it shapes up...would make a nice (early) Christmas present for myself, huh?! :)

That's for sure, especially if you get a good deal on it to boot! :D

taborton101 10-27-2011 08:29 PM

Yeah, we'll see, but that would be sweet...they posted the reserve...have it at $16.5k ...seems pretty reasonable to me...

I agree on the reserve being reasonable. If it goes that low, I might have to hit up the bank for a loan!

A beautiful card!
Curious, why does SGC label that as a rookie?

taborton101 10-28-2011 07:33 AM

:) Doug - yeah, I'm giving serious thought to the same thing!

...and that's an interesting question - I'm unsure why SGC labels it with a 'rookie'?

I have no idea. They used to label the 1952 Topps Wilie Mays as a "rookie" too, but they apparently stopped doing it on that card.

taborton101 10-28-2011 10:43 AM

I wonder, does SGC also place a 'rookie' on the '51 Bowman Mantle?

Yes. SGC graded '51 Bowman Mantles have the "rookie" designation on the label as well.

Here's another question I have about this card (and other high $ cards), which may have a chance at being bumped up a grade or two if re-submitted...do you try to 'crack' it out first? (and if so, what's the best / most careful way to do it? too risky for these cards??)...or do you take your chances at sending it in the current slab? (ie, would PSA really give this a 6.5/7 if they thought it deserved it?...or, would they be less likely to if submitted in an SGC 6 slab?)...thoughts?

I submitted a SGC 40 VG 1952 Topps Mantle to PSA in the SGC holder and they still bumped it to a PSA 4 VG-EX so from my experience it's possible to get a higher grade without cracking the card out of its current holder.

As much as I love this card does not deserve a 7, too much wear on all 4 corners, a nice "6"

taborton101 10-29-2011 10:01 AM

Doug - interesting - you must've been pretty confident it was a '4'...that's great.

Another question, would be interested in thoughts - better to go with the nice '6' (with slight corner wear, but good centering)...or with a '7/8oc'??...think personally I'd rather have a nice 6 vs. off-centered...presents better imho...

I was actually just crossing the card over and the grade bump came as a total surprise. As far as your question goes, if you would rather have a nice 6 with good centering, that's probably what you should go with. If you are going to drop that much on a card you want to make sure you are happy with it! :)

ChiefBenderForever 10-29-2011 10:59 AM

This was a great buy imo, basically a NRMT flawless card other than centering, can't get any more pack fresh than this-

SGC70

http://www.robertedwardauctions.com/...n/2011/12.html

And here is another one, looks the same but got a slight grade higher and a lot more making the sgc70 a great deal

SGC80

http://www.robertedwardauctions.com/.../2008/649.html

edit to add that- after looking closely at both links above it appears that this is the same card, someone must have had it regraded and took a half grade bump lower and 13k loss......

It sure looks like the same card and the descriptions are almost the same word for word. The only strange thing is how it went from a SGC 80 in 2008 to a SGC 70 in 2011? I think if you send a card into SGC for a review they can downgrade it, but it seems like part of the grade guarantee is that they pay you the difference for overgrading it in the first place. If someone cracked that card and it came back a SGC 70 the second time and they took a $13k hit on it, they can't be too happy!

taborton101 10-30-2011 10:09 AM

I agree that definitely looks like the same card - amazing how much the grade affected the price (I'm sure the economy, timing etc. factored in too somewhat...but still, that's unbelievable).

...and $35k for the SGC 80/6 !?!...must be one of the highest I've heard for that grade...makes the $16.5k reserve on the current Mantle that's up for auction look like a steal...

taborton101 11-02-2011 09:53 AM

worth a run???

Hey guys - just checked the auction site - reserve's been met on the Mantle, so it's going - current bid is right at $16.5k...is it worth making a run at this card??...if so, any thoughts on a ceiling bid (range)??
