Real or Fantasy

Here's a question that's been gnawing at me for a while. Given the nature of this piece, I should probably know the answer, but have to plead my ignorance. You see these figural doorstops on Ebay from time to time. The prices seem to range quite a bit (everywhere from $100 to $900).

There seem to be 2 versions out there. Both are currently on ebay. The first (higher priced one) has a square base and a painted home plate. The paint appears to be rather sloppily applied, and looks like it could easily be a modern piece (made to look old...)

The second (currently listed for a third of the price) looks to be better crafted, and has a circular base. The Player portion is slightly different, in addition to the base...

So, now the questions... Are both versions legit? Are both fantasy pieces? If one is real and one fake, then which is which?

My inclination is that both are modern fantasy pieces, but it's just a guess. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

Mark,

I'm thinking they are both modern pieces.
The question is -- do the sellers know that?

Thanks Greg and Joe...

Either the sellers don't know that (or they are pretending they don't know). Based on the pricing, I don't think I've seen a seller in the past decade that "knows".

These are always listed for over $100... more commonly in the $500 - $750 range. Sometimes they sell... more often they don't.

Anyway, thanks for putting this one to rest :)

Door Stops

Always tough to tell iron pieces without handling them but I have never seen a period piece with this design. The fact that there are a couple around would lead me to say modern aged decorative pieces.

I've always avoided these Mark. I simply have zero confidence in them.

Seems like they copied the style of the batter from the andirons.
