Goodwin & Co. Auction Results
2 Attachment(s)
It's always nice to be the only bidder on a lot when it goes to extended bidding.
I'm very pleased to add this T213-2 to my Chief Meyers collection. I believe it's my first Brooklyn card. Best of luck to everyone else! Patrick |
I did my first consignment ever with Goodwin last night. Three lots. Two lots went so-so, the third went way under VCP. I would have done better selling that one on Ebay myself. I bid on multiple lots and didn't win anything. I was the direct underbidder on the Sport Kings Babe Ruth. I thought the card looked sharp, but it technically bothered me with the paper loss on the bottom back, and at the top that wasn't mentioned. Not sure if technically a card with paper loss can be a '4'. Also, the case was cracked at both the joints on the front. Didn't want the hassle of re-casing it. Anyway, that is how I fared. Would love to hear others.....

lost out
Due to some financial constraints I couldn't go for at least one card I wanted, though there will be another one of those. To me, in looking at the auction, it seems great items that are scarcely seen, AND in high demand, continue to fetch great prices. Other cards, even though as scarce, but with less audience, aren't faring as well. I was happy to see the #1 lot go for over 5k, when another board member and myself fought over this one on ebay approximately 6 mos ago, a grade higher (no pinhole but stain on back), for about 40% of that final price...In a cursory view, skimming the auction, seems prices were fairly strong.

1910 COUPON red Cobb (T213-1)
Leon
Just my opinion....the 1910 COUPON Cobb (at this point in time) proves to be the scarcest of the the white-bordered red Cobb's. With only 10 examples known (pop report data), it's a bit scarcer than the Ty Cobb back version of the red Cobb (15 known). I'm happy with this one since it represents a great looking front (than most of the T213-1 Cobb's). Scarcest red background Cobb t206?
What about drum, uzit, lenox? |
same here Leon
I was a spectator for the most part, didn't have the funds to chase some of the higher priced items.
It's almost like 10 new t213 buyers were born to the market. Goodwin gets excellent prices for some of those cards... especially compared to what they are selling for on ebay.. |

I have one question : What time did the auction finally end ? I gave up the ghost at 2am central and finally put in a max bid on one card, which was not approached. I don't like putting in max bids as it makes you feel like a target. Luckily, my max bid was not approached...
The Type 1 Coupon's fetched strong prices, especially the Cobb and Southern Leaguer's. - Ted Z. - I hope you finally captured the Ted B Type 1 ! - Jim R. - I hope you won the half dozen SLer's Coupon's! (I put in firm bids, but didn't want to chase them through the roof) - Chris - I hope you got your SL Type 1 example as well... Strong prices on many lots... I won this one card after looking for it for 11 years... |

I am referring to the general Tobacco issues (T206, T213, T214, and TY COBB brand) of the red Cobb. Not their brand sub-sets. As of today, pop-reports regarding the T206 BROAD LEAF 460, DRUM & LENOX indicate that just a few examples of the red Cobb with these backs have been graded. Incidently, there is no UZIT red Cobb. Regards, TED Z |
really?

I have seen four T214 Cobb's in the past 30 years. Presently, I don't know how many are graded.
Perhaps, some one here will check-out the various pop-reports and report the data regarding the VICTORY brand Cobb's. TED Z |
1915 T214 Victory Ty Cobb SGC
ted-
there are 2 t214's listed on the sgc pop report (both 30's)... since we're on the subject, how many KNOWN examples are there of the red cobb sovereign 460? there are only three on the sgc pop report... but, how tough is this combination really? |
Looks like Brockelman and Luckey is next up. That is always a fun auction!

Just picked up 2 Ruths along with a Speaker / Jackie. Pretty happy with Goodwin everytime around.
|
I knew GAI prices fell off, but getting a GAI 7 Jackie '50 bowman for under $400 is pretty crazy.

But really... congrats on all of your pick-ups. Top-notch cards for sure. Regards, Jimmy |

Since Goodwin's didn't have any cards from sets I am trying to complete, I just bought a couple which looked nice and were at a great price.

I got this one .. not collecting, but thought it was a good buy and nice card for the grade. Decent upside potential given scarcity?

I was watching about a dozen pre-war cards in this auction. Didn't even stay tuned for the overtime...most were overpriced before closing time IMO. Some of the exact items had sold in the last couple years for substatially less elsewhere.
Just looked at the final prices on these lots - all way more than I would pay. On the other hand, I've gotten some nice deals on pre-war cards on eBay the last few days...one for 60% less than the exact card auctioned for at H&S this summer... Cheers, Blair |

Auction finally ended at around 4:30-4:45 AM EST.
Thought about competing with you Pete on the Robinson... glad you got it though! |

Thanks, it's a beauty. Now I just nope it's not trimmed when I get it. I think there were only 3 bids on that puppy. |
Had a good laugh though at this quote from Goodwin's description on the E90-1 Speaker:
"Cards of Speaker are virtually non-existent." Huh????????????? Speaker played for decades. My master list of Speaker cards - during his active career - is as long as my arm. He is one of the very few who has a card in T206 and 1933 Goudey. Sometimes the sales pitch goes WAY beyond reality... Cheers, Blair |

Thanks Blair. I'm not doing the entire set; just collecting the hall of famers. With these three, I now need only the Keeler portrait w/ red background. Steve |

As the underbidder
I was quite surprised at how high the E104-III Grant went!

Rob Lifson knew of only two Victory Cobbs when he auctioned one a couple of years ago.
JimB |
Not sure how accurate this is
Only three Ty Cobbs have been graded: one is graded PSA GOOD 2, and two examples (including this one) are graded SGC GOOD 30. Incredibly, the T214 Victory Ty Cobb is even rarer than suggested by these modest population report numbers, as the three graded examples represent only two different cards. (It is our understanding that many years ago the PSA GOOD 2 example was crossed over to an SGC GOOD 30 holder, and the old PSA label was never returned to correct the pop report). http://www.robertedwardauctions.com/auction/2010/8.html |

It was certainly spectacular for the grade, but it is very very high by pricing standards for E104-IIIs (which I've been following for a number of years now).
The last SGC 70 Tully Sparks sold for only a little more $$$, and this Grant sold for significantly more than two of the [uncatalogued at the time] Dooin cards that surfaced a few years ago, one at the same grade, one higher. |
FWIW, Huggins & Scott handled a raw "new to the hobby" T214 Victory Cobb a couple of years back.

For what it's worth, from my research (and I've done quite a bit on this topic), there are only 2 T214 Cobbs known to exist. There is the one that was sold in H&S and subsequently in REA and a second example that has been known to the hobby for quite some time.
There was rumor of a third, but the story was so far fetched that I tend to discount it. |

Picked up this one, as you don't see many around.
