Wounded Ruth--how many of you have settled on a Babe?

I recently received my first Goudey Ruth card. As you can see in the scan it is quite the happy fellow. I scanned it while still in the card saver sleeve, as I am afraid to move it. Why, you might ask? Because I have it nicely lined up and thus I can pretend it is actually just one piece, and moving it from its sleeve would put a nasty ol' crimp in this illusion.

Ruth cards are usually some of the most expensive in our hobby, and because of this I imagine more than myself are willing to accept low condition examples. Perhaps others would like to share their less than perfect Babes?

Not to hijack the thread, but here's my 2-piece card of another pricey HOFer. Still works for me! :)

Not even major reconstructive surgery can save the Babe..haha.

GREAT thread tho. I look forward to more of these pictures.

Although it is still intact (barely) SGC refused to encapsulate this card for fear that it would break apart during the process.

Brian, I'm all for collecting rough cards when you need to (to a point) but that Ruth is tough to look at!

I failed to include a back scan which would show a back darkened with soiling. Avert thine eyes and enjoy!

It's hard to tell from the scan, but there may be a minor crease in the lower right corner.

steve B 09-07-2011 08:18 AM

I don't actually have any Ruth cards, so I guess I could say I haven't settled.
Plenty of opportunities, the shop I hung out at would hand me a Ruth a couple times a year and tell me I should buy it. They were right, but I never did go for one.

I have always been fascinated by Babe Ruth (as my screen name might show), and when I was a kid I swore I would one day own an old card of his. I'm 35 now and still don't have one....so I would be ecstatic to own a wounded Ruth like the ones shown in this thread.

I failed to mention the crease strictly for the purpose of accuracy.

Brian, that's the only time in his life that the Babe had an "hourglass figure"! :D

Here is one I used to have and would love to buy back. It's a 1, but it looked great.

I just sold two pretty toasted Babes on ebay this week.
W515-2 sold for $107.50.
W516-2-1 sold for $355.00.

When I decided to buy a Babe Ruth card for my collection, I settled on this 1934 Goudey premium, which looks great, but lacks the easel on its back and therefore only graded "authentic." I didn't want to spend $2,000 for a nice-looking Goudey, I didn't want to spend a nickel on some ugly strip card and I ultimately chose the '34 premium over an Exhibit card because I didn't like any of the poses. So here it is, courtesy of Buckler Cards. I still don't understand why these don't sell for more ...

Awesome thread. Here is my one and only Ruth. I always dreamed of owning one. It's not quite a Goudey but close. Not bad for a 1.5 too, no paperloss or marks.

A Ruthian blast from the past

It has been four years since I originally posted this thread, and I thought it would be fun to see if any additional mangled Babes have risen from the depths.

Was reading through and enjoying the images, NOT even realizing it was 4 years old!

My only Ruth isn't really a beater, but it was the nicest one I could afford. I want to pick up a 1933 Goudey at some point down the road.

I am lucky in that many of my collecting tastes fall outside of what "the people who get paid for their opinions" choose to "grade", so the prices tend to be lower, which is kind of funny when you think about how rare some of these items can be, in comparison to his "gradable" cards.

Here are some of my Babe items...
A scorecard from his last ML pitching victory (and he hit HR #686)
Blum's Bulletin
Butterfinger premium
La Presse roto
Baseball magazine supplements

brianp-beme 09-09-2015 02:12 AM

Ruth

Great examples everyone...a Babe is a babe no matter if freshly sliced, lightly toasted, or ready to make bread crumbs.

Nice Ruth collections Erik and Doug.

I am surprised that no real strip cards, besides the W517, have been shown. I imagine many have settled on them because of the relatively low expense.

Brian

brianp-beme 07-21-2023 01:47 AM

Almost 8 years later and it is just about time to see some more substandard Ruths. Especially since the escalation in pricing over these years for his cards means that now substandard is the new hoped for Ruthian standard for over 90% of us Babe hungry collectors.

Here is one I was able to pick up over the thread's 'lost years of zero posts' dry spell. Please note that it is also in two pieces just like the 1933 Goudey I showed in the original post 12 years ago...at least my standards have remained consistent, though there has been a slight upgrade in that these two card pieces are held together by tape.

The only Ruth card (and Gehrig card) that i will settle for in absolutely abominable condition will be their Butterfinger "cards." Finding those in any condition is a challenge, and I think I am willing to except a "1" or less to complete my set.

Great thread and love the cards and thee patina on many of them

I have depending what is available, rarity, budget etc

Here is an ultra 1923 that looks like the 1921 but more rare

And here is one that looks like took a bullet to Ruth’s head

And another that looks like it was crumbled up and thrown away or used in the spikes of a kids bike

Crazy to think that all of us would happily step into a time machine and buy every single beater we could have gotten at 2011 prices.

I got these long before it was fashionable:

https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...925%20Ruth.jpg
https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...ons%20Ruth.jpg

I did not know PSA would qualify a 1...I mean, come on, it's a 1.

This one after wrecked Ruths became au courant:

https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...0Ruth%201.jpeg

Sobering to think I paid more for the last one than the others combined. Are we at the point of 'get in or get left out' with most Ruth cards?

I think the get in or get out ship has sailed. I am stuck in limbo. Here is a trimmed Butterfinger that I think I paid $200 for, before I knew it was trimmed. I got it for around $200, so in today's world, probably haven't lost any money.

CardPadre 07-21-2023 10:43 AM

This is a really neat thread that I’m glad was resurrected. Here are mine. The Sport Kings was my first solo Ruth card and I’ve never been more excited in my life to get a card than I was for that guy.

The 144 was from earlier this year and I just couldn’t pass up a sub-$800 Goudey Ruth. Would probably buy 5 more at that price if they ever come around. A pleasantly surprising bonus is virtually all the text on back is present and legible…which you wouldn’t expect based on the front.

And the little guy satisfies my itch for the 1935 and allowed me to sell my actual 4-in-1 to put towards another Ruth.

Actually Adam, that last Ruth...unless the back is mangled or I missed something, that's the best Poor Ruth I think I've seen recently! Great card!

The only Ruth that I have and could afford back in the early 80's still raw and not graded, also a being a variation with the apostrophe and the extra line Babe Ruth can be saved for quarts of ice cream
