Anyone here buy the SC Cobb w/ Factory Number?

I saw this listing, but it didn't last long. Cobb Bat On with the partial "30" factory number on the back. Anyone here pick it up?

I don't know why the factory number shows there. I've seen scans of 25 and 30... And even had one several years ago and sold it without knowing what it was. Maybe trae or Johnny know the purpose.

T206.org 07-27-2011 09:20 PM

I'm not totally sure, really. For whatever reason, they stamped the factory number. I've never seen a 25 though - let's see one please!

Here's Johnny's Merkle:

t206 SHEET NUMBERS

THANKS TRAE!!!

Mr. merkle was a bargain;)

ok....my theory.....pre- printed fronts, for some reason,.....blank backs....might have been shipped to ny to be designated.....prob stamped each sheet as either fact "25" or "30".....then then back adds printed....
the card has to be cut/miscut just right to show the desig...
a multi print back showing this fact would disprove ....i havent seen one yet..
btw ...i have 3 or 4 fact 30, but no 25's, they are tuff!!!;)

i would like 2 c a fact 25 also!! i have seen a scan of one or 2 but thats it:(

peace

I would presume these were marked with the bigger numbers in a corner or bottom of a column to make life easier for the workers handling the sheets. They did have to be careful that the factory designations were correct to comply with the existing laws of the day and there's no way the tiny factory # little lines could have been read correctly. Hell, I need a magnifying glass to see most of them...

Pattern

Interesting that:

1. All of the cards posted so far are SC 350/30s; and

2. All of the subjects [Cobb (Bat On), Gilbert, Merkle (Portrait) and Spade] are 150/350.

Not sure what this means; just an observation.

Looked this up because I remember the thread.

I recently picked up one, but a little bit different. The beginning of the factory number can be seen on the right side of the back, and not the bottom or top. I have not seen that before. Is that a little more unusual? Why would this happen?

To boot, its a Rhoades "Right Arm Extended".

Is this a printer's mark?

I recently purchased this t206 Ganzel and noticed a strange mark above the 'T' in Piedmont. Is this a printer's mark or something else? Has anyone else seen something like this?

Probably damage to the stone. If something gets dropped on it and scratches through the coating that holds water the scratched area will print. That mark should be consistent for a certain percentage of that card. Fairly common if the damage was early in the press run, pretty tough if it happened later.

I don't believe these were damage to stones or print anomalies. They were intentional and the quoted theory above is the one I believe to be the most plausible explanation.

I have seen 7 different players so far that have a partial red "30" on the back of the card. On six of them, it appears on the bottom and as mentioned earlier in this thread, Rhoades (arm extended), the number is on the right side. Of the 7 players, I have seen more examples of Rhoades than any other. The backs on all 7 are Sweet Caporal 350 Fac #30.

I haven't seen a "25" yet, but sure would like to.

Erick, it wasn't me who bought the Cobb.

SGC Johnson sold two weeks ago over at Legendary, PSA is currently on eBay. I have only seen one card with a 25.

Are there any cards out there with the rest of the "30" or "25" on the top of the card?

Sorry, I should have quoted. It came across as unclear.

The 30s are intentional and probably part of the plate/stone rather than stamped.

The mark over the T on the piedmont card is probably damage.

Steve - Thanks for clarifying and I agree the Piedmont mark is just a print defect or ink smudge.
