T206 OLD MILL SL Brown Back?
I need an expert opinion please. I have 3 T206 Old Mill SL cards and they don't look like the other Old mill T206s. It is not faded because all 3 look exactly the same. Could these be brown backs?
Thanks, Dan http://i976.photobucket.com/albums/a...l/IMG_1736.jpg http://i976.photobucket.com/albums/a...l/IMG_1740.jpg http://i976.photobucket.com/albums/a...l/IMG_1741.jpg |
Of the 2 backs I see there...1 looks like faded black...but both look black to me.

T206 OLD MILL SL Brown Back?
Sorry, but both look just faded black to me. Plus King is not one of the Southern Leaguers known with a Brown Old Mill back.

Worth a shot
Thanks guys,
I only have 3 Old Mill SL Cards and they all look like that, so I have nothing to compare. I read somewhere that the brown backs were not discovered until the 2000's and that people had always just passed them off as faded. That's why I posted them on here. You guys are always more than helpful. Thanks, Dan |
It was T206 Museum.com
Awesome site.
Old Mill -- Color variations on Old Mill brand are only known to exist on Southern Leagues players. The two colors are black and brown. These two colors are not as easy to distinguish as brown and red. However, one can still tell the different by bare eyes. These brown Old Mill Southern Leagues backs are just a recent found in the early 2000's, they are still not fully recognised by most collectors. Similar to the Lenox variations, some collectors think these brown specimens are just the faded version of regular black backs but that's a misconception. |
I would also like to add that these cards where my great grandfathers and have been in my family for ~100 years.

T206 OLD MILL SL Brown Back?
Dan,
Here is the link to a thread that has a good scan of a Brown Old Mill SL back and has examples of the Brown and Black versions side-by-side. http://www.net54baseball.com/showthr...=dutch+revelle BTW, don't trust everything you read on T206museum.com - that sight is not exactly credible. Steve |
This situation has happened to me also, I thought a faded black OM I had was brown, because I was comparing it to a solid black one I had....good thing you asked though, just incase :D
Agree with steering clear of T206museum......... Sincerely, Clayton |
The following 14 - T206 Southern Leaguer's will not be found with the Brown OLD MILL backs......
Bastian Hart (Little Rock) Hart (Montgomery) King Lentz Miller Orth Rockenfeld Seitz Smith (Shreveport) Stark Thebo Westlake White (Houston) TED Z |
Black Backs
Both are black backs...

Thank You
After seeing that great example Steve posted I defiantly don't have any brown backs.

Thanks for the list Ted Z.

All brown Old Mills are hand cut and likely never saw the inside of a pack. The brown on the old mills is like that on brown Hindus and is easy to recognize. If you have to ask, it is not a brown old mill. Brown Lenox is a darker shade of brown and not as obvious

Hand-Cut
What Jim said. Brown Old Mills were hand-cut.
If your OM SLer would grade other than "A" it is not a Brown Old Mill. |
