T206 "error" on eBay

Any thoughts on this "error" ending shortly? Is this a legit printing error? Worth the $200??

I don't know about "legit" printing error. But these anomalies are highly collectible. These irregular cards have almost a cult-like following..

molen 06-30-2011 09:17 AM

Have printing errors, similar to this one, been seen before? Where one color gets omitted?

iggyman 06-30-2011 09:33 AM

Since you asked, I would pay a slight premium for one (+$5 to +$10, but nothing more unless the color variation was retro tie-die cool). For the past year, I've tried to collect T206 with orange backgrounds that would otherwise be red. I've picked up 18 different ones. They are not as rare as Lenox back cards, more inline with an EPDG back (probably more so). I've noticed that the T206 Beaumont, O'Leary and Snodgrass (batting) are much more common with orange/yellowish backgrounds then other T206 cards, but talk to me in ten years when I have more data.

The "B" is missing from his jersey. That is certainly a legitimate color variation.

iggyman 06-30-2011 09:54 AM

Perhaps you are right Barry, but the "B" is not missing. It's there, just not in red.

I know, I can see a shadow of the "B". But the red ink is missing and to me that's a cool card.

Ive had many of these in the past, they sell good, and this thread will help this one obviously.

Ive had 2 of the Speakers missing most or all of the red ink, but the background color was the same so the card looked more like a true "error" card than the print flaw that it really is.

These are all just print flaws and not man made errors (design changes). In my experience the HOFers will sell for 3X more. The common players with nice background color differences will sell for 4-6X more.

Here are a few random scans of some examples...

I love the way that Kelley looks with the brownish background.

Okay, I'll play. I've shown this before, but here is my magenta-less T206 Wallace card. Guess I will call it no "STL on shirt" variation.

t206 "error"

hello guys!!:)

you know i was going to say something....great cards btw;), and the true hobby legends and vets chimmed in David, Barry, Frank, Iggy( one of our true print specialists ;))......

color background variations are really cool(market price 50-100 bucks, they are scarce, but pretty "common errors"

the beaumont is what i consider the "LIGHT B VERSION"...... or a "pink" or a "hint" of magenta.....my theory, some others also,....simple logic- magenta was running low, varying degrees of missing magenta....think of a pen that's slowly running out of ink, maybe a red pen for example....

many Boston players have a bizzaro missing magenta counterpart,(there are also many cinn players with this same phenom... SWEENEY IS THE MOST RECOGNIZED AS THE BOSTON PLAYERS, HAS THE MOST FAME!! wether they survived is the true quetion.....many have different backs, suggesting backs printed last....there are starr, ferguson, sweeney, speaker, bell, ritchety, niles(one on ebay from dan mckee right now slabbed as missing etc etc etc with all versions of missing magentas completely or almost completely) which i have seen either slabbed or not(hence the "pink" version as almost completely in this example where the b or magenta portion is very very light)...ALL BOSTON PLAYERS HAVE A MISSING MAGENTA COUNTERPART, JUST HAVE TO FIND IT ;)that would be a cool project for someone....collect asll the boston missing magentas...i have 2 ritcheys(waiting for call) and one sweeney(which is slabbed)

the pink version market price-50 to 75 dollars BTW, SGC DOESNT NOT RECOGNIZE THE "PINK VERSIONS":D don't try even try it!!i have about 10 of them..

the "missing" magenta's slabbed as such (preferrably sgc)= $1000

moral- if it isn't almost completly gone, it's the "pink" version....only the graders can make the call on them!!!

i have 2 claude ritchey totallly missing magenta that will be on the way to sgc to make judgement!!i also have a few lights, like i said about ten, that just won't make it through...i will try to post scans of them if i can....

omg, i hope this sounds somewhat clear:D

peace

I am a printer and like these cards I run the CMYK color 90% of the time. When running long runs you typically have to refill the ink wells every two hours or so and the printer of those cards was just a bad one who was probably in the rest room or having a cigar and forgot to fill up the M well, it might have cost him his job.

great job iggy....

and always great to hear from a printer chris!!!:)

Some of the variations look better than the standard cards.

A few red ink variations I like:

Great info everyone, thanks. I definitely learned a ton about printing variations and "errors." The one in question didn't sell. I, being relatively new to the T206 game, didn't have enough info before bidding on the print "error" in question. I was worried it wasn't a true print error and was doctored in some fashion. And besides, it sounds like the $199 price might have been a touch high. I'm considering emailing the seller to see if they'd be open to an off the books offer or to see if they plan to relist it.
