Lelands Auction- Mathewson 1898 team photo
Anyone here win this item?
I was the high bidder until 3:52 am. I was certain I had won this 1898 Honesdale BAseball club team photo which included Mathewson. Has anyone ever seen this before? Thanks |
Something didn't look right about the photo to me.
I don't think it was from 1898.

what about it concerns you Patrick?

Don't know
I have acquired some photos over the last year or so and am still really getting up to speed. But, something just doesn't look right to me. I was hoping some of the photo experts could chime in here.

I can second what Patrick is saying. It is a "type 2 photo" if you want to use that terminology (which I dont like by the way). That type of photo paper was not used in 1898. I would say it was probably produced during Matty's lifetime but not in 1898, more likely about 1915 would be my guess. Still a cool item but if it cost the buyer more than a few hundred bucks it was probably too much but hey, I overpay for things I want all the time so that is subjective, but I would value it around $200-$300 at the most.

Personally, I'm saving up for this beauty in a future auction...I can't be sure, but isn't that Ty Cobb beside Matty...what makes it tough to recognize them is that they are both wearing "shower caps."

After looking at it, I agree 100%. I like Lelands and probably win more things from them then any other auction house I bid on..........but you really have to do your research with their photographic offerings. This is not a unique occurrence...................with them or any sports auction house I know of in regards to vintage photos. The same research that's put into cards and other memorabilia, doesn't seem to be put into vintage photos. |
That's Joe Jackson not Ty Cobb
|
And that's the Matty "White Cap, Black Box" variation.
