ca. 1909 Obak Postcard.....and thread
2 Attachment(s)
A friendly board member asked me to post this for him. We spoke about putting it in the tobacco pack thread but I can't believe another Obak thread would be a bad thing? Here is a link to the site the postcard is on too. It is a great website that any collector should love to view.

That's way cool. Thanks for showing that.

back slogan subset
Another subset idea, back slogans. There are 35 different in the 1910 set. Most of these were obtained at one time from a very original collection. Collected by the person's grandfather that I got them from, in the 1910's, in Grass Valley, California. His great great grandfather had come to CA for the gold rush and the original house was still in the family. These were sitting in a box for about 70 yrs...

I had no idea there is 35 different. My favorite has to be "Clean - Wholesome" like it's a loaf of fresh baked bread or something.
|
Is that addressed to Warren Bowman's father?
|
Lame idea Leon only a fool would want to collect that subset... :)

There used to be a very informative website called vintagecardboard.com that covered all things Obaks. Unfortunately, it no longer exists, but I was able to run a web archive search and come up with vintagecardboard's listings of which 1910 Obaks came with which backs. The link takes a couple seconds to load, so don't be deterred by the wayback machine beta page that initially shows up.

John/Leon... maybe I'm seeing things, but there almost looks to be a variation on the backs. In Leon's scan, one back appears to say "For Exacting Smokers" (with both an initial and end quote). On John's scan, his comparative back seems to say For Exacting Smokers" (with only an end quote).

ps...Dave- no idea on if that card is addressed to whom you asked about....it is as can be seen and I sort of doubt much more is known about it. |
Actually Leon, your card appears to have both quotes... It's John's that is missing the initial quote.
|
correct...

My 150 series Obaks have both lines of the initial quotemark, while 2 of my 175 series Obaks only have one of the lines in the initial quotemark. Another 175 series card I own has just a smidgen of the initial line of the quotemark (didn't scan that one).

Great site!
I just used the Way Back machine to see the site Anthony recommended. Wow!
I was looking at the Tacoma Giants stats part which are no longer available. My question for you PCL experts and fans is about Earl Anthony the Pro Bowler. He was a player in the PCL that did not make it too long, and turned to the Pro Bowling route. I was wondering if anyone recalls seeing him on a card or in a program? Any info would be appreciated! Thanks, Bill Hedin |
Back to back Obak back listing
I believe the Obak back information on the defunct site was based upon an article that J. Obermayer did for VCBC 8-10 years ago, in case you want a hard copy. I think the article had a follow up in a later edition with updated information.

Jon,
Very cool I will check my examples tonight to see if the missing quote mark is on others etc. Leon large vs. small pricing classic. John |
