June 2011 pick up thread
OK I got the month off on the right foot.
2 nice Gehrig photos. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...uatfirstfr.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...uatfirstbk.jpg I have to say the scan doesn't do the picture justice. It has beautiful clarity. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2.../LouHankfr.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2.../LouHankbk.jpg See Graig...I told you! |
Beautiful photo of the great Gehrig and the great Greenberg, Mark.
|
Thanks David.
The clarity in person is even better than the scan. It immediately became one of my favorite photos in my collection. Mark Also I've dated that pic to 1935 as that is the only year, according to Dressed to the Nines, that the Tigers used the white caps with blue brims. Also 1936 was when the Yanks started to wear the "NY" on the front of their home uniforms. |
Magnificent image, Mark...
And what a wonderful Kreindler Painting that would make. Can't help but think about what Graig would do with that one. An epic photo, and a potential masterpiece in waiting  |
Mark, the Gehrig/Greenberg photo is awesome! Another nice pickup!
|
Yeah, Mark, I echo all of those sentiments. It's a beautiful photo indeed. It's really got a quiet elegance to it. And you can be sure that I'd love to paint it. Aside from the obvious beauty of the players and all, I really dig all of the different textures throughout: Gehrig's sleeves in relation to Greenbergs, the dirt, the wooden bats, the granite stands...just really, REALLY cool!!

Baseball Pins...

Hey guys, Just received the American Association Pin today. Had the OAL ball for a month or so. I know absolutely nothing about these pins, just that they depict those incredible baseballs ( Baseballs in which I collect ). Can anyone enlighten me with some info on these pins, and answer whether there are more "baseball" pins like this out there to collect? Greatly appreciate any help.

The two you have are the most common ones you see. They come in a couple of different sizes. The largest I have ever had was 1 1/2"

I believe that this is the same photo used for the 1957 Topps Brooks Robinson Rookie Card.............

OK I've gone a little wild so far this month.
I got these as part of a bigger deal. I am pretty sure that these are Type 1 originals based on the stampings. The first is a 1927 Charles Conlon Rogers Hornsby portrait. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...rnsbyFront.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ornsbyback.jpg Second is a 1946 of Jackie Robinson in the Montreal Royals Uniform. The article talks about him playing inn Louisville in the Shaunessy playoffs. It also talks about Robinson being "the first negro ballplayer to participate in post season play in the history of organized professional baseball" http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ackieFront.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...JackieBack.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...insonback2.jpg |

Very nice Jackie and Hornsby photos! |
Thanks Phil!
Though I'm not sure if I am going to be able to keep them. :( I just got offered something even nicer, so I might have to sell these to raise money. Too many things showing up at the same time. I guess it's a good problem to have. Mark |

Picked up these two Type 1s a few days ago, and man, am I happy I did.

I especially love the Henrich, with the sun sculpting his face. I might do paintings of these. Maybe. Definitely. I'm starting now. Graig |

My special thanks to a fellow board member for making this piece available to me. As a bonus on page 5 of the sheet music, a little razzle dazzle for the Royal Rooters during the 1915 World Series.

First June Pick Ups

1. An early crescent padded, buckle back catchers mitt that features a sewn pocket, rivited rim and web, and an adjustable strap...couldn't be happier with this one.
2. An early Cooperstown/Baseball HoF pennant...from the pennant itself and the image reflected in the graphics, it was probably made not long after the opeining of the Hall itself. 3. Real nice 1870'/ 80's era "figure 8" baseball....lots of character. www.dugouttreasures.com |
That mitt looks beautiful, nice pickup.

Not an expensive pickup, but grabbed a nice 40's era flannel, thought it would look good with my WWII Jersey collection.

Possibly the earliest known Wade Boggs game used bat dating from his minor league days in 1977. Shows great use, pine tar, uncracked, ball marks. Getting him to sign it next month.
|
Hi Brock,
That's a nice Boggs bat. I'm curious about something, though. You mention that it dates to 1977, which would have been Boggs' first full minor-league season (after hitting .263 in rookie ball). I'm surprised that he would have had a signature model bat at that stage of his career. I played with a lot of highly touted guys in the minors (Gary Sheffield, Greg Vaughn, B.J. Surhoff, Shawn Abner), and I don't remember any of them having signature models bats until after they signed a major-league contract. We all had our names on our bats, but always in block letters. This was in the mid to late 1980s, so maybe things were different when Boggs entered pro ball. Anyway, just a thought. Rob |
Rob,
I'm not sure, all I know is he signed a contract with Hillerich & Bradsby in 1976. So he had a signature model right away pretty much and probably no block letter ones. Maybe he will remember it when i have him sign it? |
My first Joe Jackson decal bat. Decal seems about 60% or so there.

Recently picked up from Huggins and Scott. This is a watercolor based on an 1820s woodcut. Along with "Playng (sic) Ball", the name Jack Norris NYC 1867 is written in the oval margin of the painting. With frame the piece is a large 21x26.

Very nice piece Gary.

Hey all,
Here's another GREAT shot of Mr. Henrich from July 24, 1937: http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...enrich1937.jpg Gotta love the slug on the back, too: "Tommy Henrich selects his bat before going out to drive in some of those runs that have been helping the Yanks to win ball games on their western trip." Those newspaper guys really knew how to write... Graig |
Sandy Koufax no-hitter wire photo bonanza!
5 Attachment(s)
I had the unbelievable opportunity to pick up some high quality wire photos of all four of HOF great Sandy Koufax's no-hitters from 1962-1965. :)
Many of you may know that Sandy's 4th no-hitter (1965) was also a perfect game. The tough luck loser in this game was Cubs pitcher Bob Hendley which only allowed ONE hit! Yowzer!! All in all, this game has to be counted as one of the greatest games ever pitched in the history of baseball. |
One more Sandy Koufax perfect game photo

One more photo. Sandy and his teammates celebrating on the field after his perfect game in 1965. Enjoy!

My dad and I picked up this early Spalding Uniform recently. It has a pink or faded Red W on the chest, and its tagging dates it to the 1911 to 1913 range.

WOW!!! The best-ever image of the Babe. That Thompson is simply iconic.... a masterpice. Mark, where on earth are you finding all of these?
You're on the ultimate roll ;) |

This is a major score for me..I was able to complete my 1947-61 run of Lincoln programs, and also in the lot were two 1925 Lincoln Links (Western League) programs. I lucked into the collection too...Someone had listed a 1957 KC Athletics yearbook that showed up in my "Lincoln baseball" ebay search...curious as to why it would have the word Lincoln in the description I clicked on it and the description said that the sellers grandfather lived in Lincoln and would travel to KC for games...so I emailed the seller and asked if the collection had any Lincoln minor league items and he got back to me right away and said he believed it did, but I'd have to email his father..his father got back to me right away too...the collection had 19 programs, 4 photos and 1 handy book..he sold me the whole lot. At the rate of only 1 or 2 programs showing up on ebay in a given year, and usually it's one I already owned I wasn't sure I'd ever complete the run. I know I'll never be able to put together a pre 1947 run of programs - the two 1925's I got in the mail today are the first pre-47 I've ever seen.
|
Very cool, Dan. Congrats!!!

Thanks for the compliments. I agree with your description of this pic. It is Iconic. Sometimes it just falls in your lap. All these pics came from 2 sources. I just happen to come in contact with people who had it lying around their homes from their relatives. Color me lucky. I think I need to play the powerball now. Best, Mark |
Dan, awesome pickups! Those Link programs are especially rare. Congrats.
|
Thanks Clint...it was really a stroke of luck to run into this collection. All I have to do now is upgrade my 1955 program as it has part of the front cover cut off because of a coupon clipper. I still need many years of team photos though so the search goes on. :)
