Collecting Around The Fringes: T206

As my devotion to autographed T206 cards grows larger by the day, it has near fully eclipsed my interest in collecting anything else, including unsigned T206 cards. I have noticed that a lot of people collect T206 "around the fringes." I am not talking about tobacco brand back collectors, or pose collectors, or team, or Hall of Fame, collectors, etc. I am talking about the stamped, printer freak, scrap, etc. collectors -- people who are devoted to their T206 collections, but their cards are not as they were or what you would have expected to pull from a pack of cigarettes or scrap tobacco back in 1909-11.

In short, show your T206 collection "around the fringes". I'll start with my latest and greatest addition to my signed T206 collection:

i call this..."myers leaving body".........has all the characteristics of a "typical yellow/brown" but not the typical sweet cap 350-460 back, and the myers image is just blazn'......

Jim,

Good idea you've got there ... scanning cards that you own and then keeping the scans even after you've traded or sold the cards. A fine way to keep a record of front/back combos, etc.

Nice Uzits.

Common Theme

One of the common themes in all of these fringe T206 collections is that condition is totally irrelevant. Sure, you'd like the cards to shine, but getting a card that satisfies the extremely narrow and bizarre collector requirements is far more important. Condition becomes totally irrelevant.

scanning the cards is so easy there is no reason not to. weather it is 10 or 75.

Jim & Brian

thanks and we went fishing in Delaware this morning but the wind was so strong we could barely fish but it was the same result I caught 2 fish and Jim was in double digits with 3 16 inch crappies and 1 3lb bass.

Wouldn't it be nice to be on the hoarding show laying in a room full of rare backs with no where to move but your little living space. I think its like that at B's house. Golf balls and rare backs.:D:D:D

Howe McCormick... Where are you? :)

Anybody else collect unusual stamps on the backs of T206 cards?

teetwoohsix 05-01-2011 08:07 AM

Love this thread.....

I don't have anything in the same league as what's been shown, but just wanted to say that you all have some awesome cards !!! Love the missing ink cards- those are great !!!

Best I have are a few ink transfers (wet sheet transfers) and some ink shifts- but IMO not in the same league as these. Love those tough back runs too, and who wouldn't love signed T206's ?!? Amazing stuff you guys.......thanks for showing these cards.

Sincerely, Clayton

In my opinion it is in the same league and would love to see them. I really like the yellow/brown scrap, signed cards, wet transfers and any others that are shared. I could look at this stuff all day. It is cool to see what each member has to add. Nothing too small or too large

thanks to all for sharing

Thanks Jim-

I'm pretty sure you've seen these before. I'll use my old digital camera photo's on a few, they show it better. The Chase is an odd transfer- I know EPDG was printed 1909-1911,,1911 being Sov.460...so not sure if this was from ALC or just had an EPDG card on top of this at some point with a level of moisture? Some time down the road I plan on trying to do an experiment with two raw T206's and moisture over time to see if this would really happen.

The Blackburne's kinda weak, just a slight color shift. The Hannifan, don't know if this bled through or is a transfer.

Clayton!

Those are some sweet wet sheet transfers....thanks for posting:)if that sov 460 w/ the el principe de gales was occurred at factory, you will have an absolute GEM! nice card there Clayton if its not stacked due to "moisture", but not sure how to test that....let us know if u do that experiment, i'm interested...

Thanks Johnny- not sure how to test it either, don't want to do it with any of the raw cards I have now,, maybe down the line get a couple of real beat up cards, get them a little wet and let them sit on top of each other for some time? Don't really know how else to try it. Thanks for the nice words, I really enjoyed your cards also...you must have a very unique and awesome collection.

Regular moisture shouldn't cause a transfer. Lithographic inks are oil based so they won't be affected by moisture. Some sort of oil based solvent would be needed.

I've become extremely leery of transfers, especially any involving black ink. I recently bought a couple items- Card proofs of stamps from the 1880's- neither of them had any transfers. When they arrived from the UK having been shipped together in the same inner envelope the black one had left a very solid transfer on the other one. So the ink hadn't actually dried in roughly 130 years!

The printing process was different, but the ink used was also oil based. Lithography uses less ink than engraving, but all that will likely be needed to produce a transfer of a black back is pressure and a bit of time. And since the base of the inks is probably the same, it should work for other colors as well.

Thanks Steve, I know you know your printing and appreciate your input on this. I also remember when you posted about the stamp situation.

I have a question- if a card came into contact with an oil based solvent, wouldn't there be some type of obvious staining on the card (from the solvent)? Also, wouldn't it do some type of damage or smearing to the front of the card that the transfer is on?

I'm just wondering if I took a T206 and placed it on top of a white sheet of paper with a little weight on it, say for a week or two, do you think I'd have a light print from the back on the white sheet of paper?

Sorry for all the questions- I appreciate the help.

Sincerely, Clayton

Unfortunately, the backs are in reverse order. Took the easy way out of just flipping the pages in the scanner

Hi there,

I collect T206s with any period back stamp on them. In particular I am always on the lookout for the purple number back stamps like the one you see in my avatar. I don't come across them very often, but thanks to several fellow collectors on the board I have been able to add some to my collection.

Ted Z added the Hindu backed example a while back and I am very thankful for that one.

I am also working on a project documenting as many different back stamps as I can. If you click the link in my signature you can see the project. I haven't updated it in some time but I do have a lot of images that I have to load to the site. It's finding the time to do it that is the problem.

Most of the purple number stamped cards are mine, but not all of them.

I hope you enjoy and maybe some of you can help me with the project sometime.

Best,

AndyH

Just got them today. Originally from the Jeff Morey collection. Jane Mathewson and Blanche McGraw. Morey recalled seeing them sitting with Mrs. Gehrig at the Otesaga Hotel in Cooperstown during the Hall of Fame weekend. Cool stuff....

beautiful team set there, thanks for sharing.

cfc1909 -- similar to the reactions of others, my jaw hit the floor when I saw your collection of UZITs. unbelievable. similarly with the other rare backs in your later posts. kudos.

thanks to all for sharing these collections of T206s oddities and passions. I'm still more in realm of collecting "regular" T206s, but you've given me new thoughts...

What does the stamp read? can't make it out from the scans. just curious. impressive volume and variety, must have taken quite the effort I can only imagine.
