"Shiny crap?" The fact of the matter is that UD ushered in a whole new standard of card quality in 1989 and forced the complacent Topps to up the ante. The fact that these modern cards have had disappointing ROI has nothing to do with their quality. The "crap" should apply to the investment mentality of this era.

The one nice thing about yet another story of collector related greed, is the interest still garnered from current issued cards.

Wow. Stupid is as..well...:D
as for the "shiny crap". I'm just back in the hobby. Got a list of guys I'll build a collection around. All retired except for one (Tony Gonzalez). Or at least I think Chris Chelios is retired now, i'm waiting for 11th party independent confirmation on that one :D. But anyway, i'm purposefully staying away from all the game used, jersey, bat, and auto cards. Unless they are given to me.(thanks to the guy who gave me the jack clark ud triple auto/bat/jersey whatever that is, it's going in my display case lol). There's just a glut of those jersey, auto, and bat cards everywhere. Not my scene :)

I do not collect modern but what is really puzzling to me is the packaging for these boxes. The product is not cheap, but is sealed with nothing more than shrink wrap. A 10 dollar cell phone charger or usb stick is packaged more securely at Wal-Mart. Better packaging would keep returns down because the packaging would indicate if the contents were accessed.
