Not a Pre-80s Question...I hope that is okay
I have a sealed box of 1989 Upper Deck. I've recently watched a few eBay listings close btw. $45 - $65 per box. However, I've seen Griffey Jr. PSA 10s listed in the $150.00 range.
I'd love to open the box up and get some Griffeys and slab them. But I'm concerned that they could grade PSA 9. What has your luck been opening wax packs from the 80's and getting the best card from the set and it graded a 10? Thanks, Anthony |

Alot better chance that if you get a griffey it would be in the 7-8 range, lucky to get a 9, 10 pretty tough. jmo

If you opened 100-200 sealed sets you might get one graded a 10. You might have to open 500-1000 boxes it is that tough. Much easier to just buy a 10, or buy a handfull of 9's and crack them out and resubmit since the difference between a 9 and 10 really nothing except luck and who is grading that day. From my experience most cards from the 80's that grade 8 are usually nicer than those graded 9 and a fraction of the cost. Hard to believe that in 1990 the upperdeck set was worth more than it is now........

Plus the box only has 540 cards and the set is 800. There might be no Griffeys at all. Most cards straight out of the pack have some small flaw that will keep it from being a 10.
I'd sell the box to someone who wants to gamble. Either that or you've got a nice start to a collection of UD unopened boxes. Steve B |
Very valid points. I've kept the box of foil packs in a container for over 20 years, therefore, I haven't really mishandled the box. I just wonder if there are imperfections when the cards were packaged in the factory.
Also, there is the possibility there won't be a Jr. in there if I open all the packs. Has anyone open vintage packs and had them immediately graded? If yes, what kind of grade came back? how many 10s, 9s, 8s??? |

your odds at getting a Gem Mt grade
Are very low
If you want to open the box go ahead; but understand there are no guarantees either way Rich |
