Big Head Strip Cards
1 Attachment(s)
Picked up a bargain (in my opinion) a couple of weeks ago. Haven't seen many of these lately.
I know it has been trimmed and missing some of the corner, but was very happy with the price and a chance to have a type card. thoughts ? |

Great set
I like this set as well but sold most of the ones I had. I kept the Schalk for my Schalk set, and it doubles nicely as a type.
I find it a fnd interesting set. You see them priced very high at times and very low at others. Even with the damage $12 is a steal just based on the rarity and the clean image. James G |

20+ years ago, I bought a Big Head Ray Schalk card because I didn't have any Ray Schalk cards. But I thought it was especially ugly, and I wondered if I should throw it away---something that I have never contemplated regarding any other baseball card. But now I'm glad that I kept it.

In addition to Leon's, I've seen a few others that have a handwritten number on the top border. The cross-hairs appear to be handwritten
I used to think Babe Ruth was in follow through with his swing, but he's actually batting right handed with an open stance: http://i292.photobucket.com/albums/m...d-Bancroft.jpg[/IMG] Some of the faces on the cards seem to actually depict a different player. For example: The card with Babe Ruth's name, including him hitting right handed, did not look anything like Babe Ruth. However, the artist did not intend for Babe Ruth to resemble the man himself. The artist was portraying his name, nickname that is......the way the fans knew him. I realized this while scrolling through different player portraits and occasionally glancing at my smiling daughter, Ruth Elizabeth: ......Was a very neat experience |
The New York players have distinguishing uniform characteristics, but the Babe's uniform does not:

Many of these have the handwritten number at top. They are rare enough that a larger unique group of them will stand out.
Sort of like all those E121 Gertenrich back cards with the spot of paper lose on back (all from same old collection) example of a card with the writing at top. (printed proof marks are common as well) http://centuryoldcards.com/images/bigheadsisler.jpg |
