Hi Andy...

As you know, I just can't part with my Saperstein bookmark. However, I can help you on your #9 - Scientific Basketball written in 1922 by Nat Holman.

As you know, I collect a lot of publications. I would classify this book as being tough...but not impossible to find.

I was hoping to get somewhere in the $300 range. However, make me an offer and we'll see if we can hammer out a deal.

Here are the images for your enjoyment.

Best regards,

Pat

Hi Pat! Neat book! but...

Hi Pat! Thanks for your response. It is a neat book and I'd like to have it but I cannot justify a price nearly that high for the Nat Holman book. I have his other books that he wrote. They are more readily available but can be found for $20 each and less. I understand Scientific Basketball is much tougher to find but I would be nowhere near $300. Maybe a trade? What are you looking for? Please email me at alwysyakn@aol.com
Sincerely, Andy

Scientific Basketball

Hi Andy...

I'll hold on to it for right now. The other Nat Holman books and reprints are pretty common and the prices you mention are in line for those. However, Scientific Basketball is much, much more rare. It's a different beast.

Keep in mind that he wasn't as famous in 1922. He had just joined the Original Celtics at the end of the 1921 season. He was a college instructor and his book was published by an obscure publisher. The distribution would have been far less than his 1932, 1946, or 1950 books. Those books were widely published and are relatively easy to find.

In my time collecting books and other publications, I have actually seen more Naismith Origin of Basketball original copies than Holman Scientific Basketball books. It is in wraps...not hardcover...so it is also condition sensitive.

There are a lot of reasons that justify the greater value - just one opinion and keep in mind that I'm a basketball book snob (collector). lol! I'd probably claim this as my area of expertise in this hobby. I've even told people that if they have the copyright date, I can name the book in most cases! ;-)

Anyway...I ramble. I would make a counteroffer...however I think we are too far apart presently. We'll talk more about it in the future.

Best regards, Pat
