After trying for about four years I have finally won a m116 blueback Mordecai Brown. However, the one I picked up is a blank back. Does anyone know if SGC ir PSA will grade these?

They didn't use to years ago, claiming they were cut from an advertising sign, but who knows, they might now.

Congrats Sean.

You outbid me, but at least now I have one less person looking for a m116 brown.

I think you got a good deal on it.

Brian McQueen has had a lot of strange blank backed m116s, not sure if he ever had them graded.

Sean,
I spent several hours going back through auction sales and m116 cards prior to the end of that auction, as I am also in a similar situation looking for the M. Brown in the m116. I could not anywhere find a graded one by PSA or SGC, but did find a SGC 40 Joe Tinker,Blank back Pastel but was in a VERY early SGC graded holder. As TBob said, previously I ahd heard that PSA would not grade them. I was concerned that this card would not be graded. Best of luck on this one.

I have always been under the assumption that the M116 blank back cards were supposedly cut from an advertising sign as opposed to being some sort of proof or printers scrap. Is that a correct theory???

Lovely Day...

I think the grading companies might say it is cut from an advertising sign and not grade it, as was mentioned. If they do, it will obviously get an AUT with the cut. My example doesn't have a name at bottom. I am not sure if yours would be different because of that or not. I have never tried to get mine graded as I do think it is from an ad sign or some kind of something :) Nice pick up either way. ...

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I'm hoping they'll so it cause I plan in matting all my cubs together along with the cubs wrapper I have. In curious if I'm even gonna know if this is original when I get it as I've never seen a blank back (which is suopposedly thinner) in person.

Hi Sean...i refrained from bidding since i knew you needed that "card". And no, they will never grade it, trust me. I have had a few conversations with SGC about ad cut-outs. Nice pick-up....

milkit1 02-03-2011 07:28 PM

Hi Mark!

All I m really wanting is an authentic grade. Do you think theyd do that?

Smokey Joe 02-04-2011 12:08 PM

Nope...not even an AUT. Since what is it AUT from. SGC would like a full ad piece to show up before they could grade it. Then they would say "AUT" ad piece. IMHO

milkit1 02-04-2011 12:19 PM

Well crap. I guess I can put it in an empty sgc case and grade it myself for my framed cubs set :). It seems weird that no full poster exists. Is it possible that these aren't from posters?

Btw nice card Leon. I wonder why it doesn't hve a name?

milkit1 02-04-2011 12:22 PM

I wonder if maybe they came from salesman sample sheets? maybe sporting life made sample sheets to give to different distriubtors I.e. Newspapers, advertisers etc. ?

Smokey Joe 02-04-2011 12:31 PM

Yes, quite possible it did not come from an ad.
Since M116 cards were produced just 2 years, i am sure there are ad pieces out there but need to be found. I would guess, those who had an ad piece have no reason to keep it, after 1912 there was no reason to promote the cards.

Just like the Philly find years ago when some MINT cards were found still in the envelope. Who would of ever thought...Philly find article below.

Sean- I seem to remember a group of 4 or 5 M116s on ebay a few years back which were blue backs (1 was a Chance and 1 was a Chase as I recall), and they were sold separately but the winning bidder won all 4 or 5 then put them together and they fit like a glove, indicating they had been cut from the same sheet. Maybe someone will see this post and chime in, like the guy who bought them.
