1938 Giants collectors...

Opening Day at TPG.

Who's the fellow in the back please? Note, they're wearing the World's Fair patch (Trylon & Perisphere). Thanks!

World's Fair was 1939-40. I just looked at the '39 roster at baseball-reference.com. Closest match I could make was Mel Ott but looking at the picture it certainly doesn't scream "Ott".

Kinda looks like Ott to me.

Mark 01-25-2011 05:53 PM

Why not Ott? BTW, I think the guy in the front, on the right, is Joe Jackson incognito.

Kawika 01-25-2011 06:12 PM

Guy holding the trylon thingie actually looks kinda like Ernest Hemingway.

Thanks guys, I was leaning towards Ott as well, but he just looks more gaunt in this shot.

Reckon I should show the entire thing. 1938 NYWF promo.

Far left - Horace Stoneham?

I don't think it is Ott, but Bobby I think you are right about Horace Stoneham.

Richard, do you have a suggestion about who it is?

RichardSimon 01-26-2011 06:03 PM

No suggestion, but I am almost positive it is not Ott.

Harry Gumbert

From my 1937 Giants guide it most resembles Harry Gumbert (he's got the right ears).
