1967 Topps Punch Outs Team Checklists

I have spent the last week looking at this set in detail thanks to Al Richter's discovery of a new pose variation for the Mantle. While there may be one pose variation still to be found (jury is out on that but I feel it's possible), I'll leave most of the nuts and bolts to my most recent blog post on this crazy issue: http://toppsarchives.blogspot.com/20...ion-paper.html

Long story short, the four players thought to be in the checklist: Bob Gibson, Brooks Robinson, Roy McMillan and Bert Campaneris, appear in lineups in the set but look like No Prints as Captains. I suspect they were replaced by the four pose variations for reasons too involved to go into here but detailed in my blog post. Basically they would have fulfilled the pattern of five players per league per position. Being pulled, it looks like there are 86 players in the set, not 90.

The outgrowth of this is I worked up team checklists for the set, which does not show team affiliations, so here ya go:

good work on the 2 shortstops 1 3b and 1 pitcher makes sense
however there are 14 singles 41 doubles 24 triples and 7 quads
for a total of 196 with 2 lineups still missing to make 198

I may go back and look at that but need to process what I did this week first. Something does still seem missing but it looks like you found a new quad? I only have six of those (I think). One of the quads is a traded player so it skews the numbers I think but I am fried right now but an additonal quad (7) would make sense.

I believe I own 2 Stargells

HI Dave,

Incredible work. I haven't digested it yet, have to go back for a second run through. Not sure if I missed this, but I believe I have stargell with a stadium background and plain background - can double check and let you know.

I was wrong

Sorry, both plain background.

Grading of Punch Outs

I have this set and the captain poses. Most of it is ungraded, by choice. But in collecting the set I have acquired some graded cards and seen several. I have also had and seen several uncut 3 card panels. You can separate the panels by bending them until they separate or cut them.

On a 3 card panel the top and bottom card should have a straight top ot bottom border, but the middle card will have 2 uneven borders and the top and bottom one uneven border. Even if the cards are cut instead of bent to separate them you should see the perforations at at least one end, or on both ends of middle cards. Yet I have seen many highly graded cards with straight ends on the top and the bottom, which can only occur if the serated perforated edges are trimmed off

Is this a case where trimming a card from it natural state is acceptable ? I am not a graded guy so am just curious as to what folks think,,,.especially Larry S

Just another case.....

of the grading companies not always knowing what they are looking at. For the educated collector it is almost laughable (as well as good justification against grading or for trimming in some cases :-))

I am thinking straight edged cards could have come from the wax packs? Can's say for sure but it seems possible since they were issued as singles in those I believe.

None of the people who get paid for their opinions care about anything except getting paid for their opinions.

The proof of this is illustrated in the numerous ways that they do differentiate things that they shouldn't (1967 Topps punchouts and stickers which were released as panels) and don't differentiate things that they should (T206 back variations).

The fact that they do differentiate back variations on T206s now, after not doing so for many years only adds to their own bottom line, which also adds to my point.

i dont think the wax packs ever existed
that wrapper is probably from topps archives
there are 100s of the cello wrapper around and 0 of the wax wrapper
but i guess you never know
67 standups and 68 3d wrappers cant be found and we know they were sold in packs

Laughing out loud.

Larry - you didn't even bother to reply to my last offer. I just sent you an update, via email.
