T206 Set Complete!

Hello everyone, I wasn't sure if this was appropriate here, but after posting in the BST for a few cards I'd like to upgrade, I was encouraged to do so in the forum.

I finally completed the T206 set! (.. less the big 6)

.. still have aspirations on a Demmit and O'Hara STL, but that will take some time and deeper pockets :-)

I've only been in the hobby a few years - and even then, not really focused on completing the set until I realized about 18 months ago that I had about half of them from buys/trades here and there. Mix of PSA, SGC and BVG's - all in the 3 to 6 range with the exception of a few lower grades that I posted in BST looking to upgrade

I can honestly say I couldn't not have done it w/out Net54 members - thank you! George Leidemer introduced me to it while I introduced my checkbook to his SGC60 Walter Johnson Portrait! Since then I've made some nice buys, trades and good friends in people like Mike Healer, Johnny Stefanich (Harmonica), Larry Harris, Bill Brodhead and Martin Neal just to name a few, along w/a host of others.

Not trying to make this sound like an Academy Award speach other than just offer a sincere thank you to everyone for your help, friendship, advise and wisdom in the hobby! I'm proud to be a fellow enthusiast/hobbiest and member of this community.

Ed

Cake

Sounds like a piece of cake, I think I'll try to complete my own T206 set (lol). Do you have scans of your set? I think it would be cool that if I had a whole set like this that I could show it to everyone...I know BBCard1 has a real nice website for his "beater" T205 set that I enjoyed seeing. ...Just a thought

chaddurbin 01-06-2011 08:43 PM

quite a feat ed. imo deep down if you're a prewar guy you've thought about tackling the monster. you actually did it

toppcat 01-06-2011 09:03 PM

OK, that's pretty cool-I aspire to it as well, still a few years off! What next?!?!?

What would Joe say?

Let me add my congratulations, Ed. However, as a tribute to my old friend Joe Pelaez, I will say on his behalf that you haven't really completed the set. :)

Please take this the way it's meant. Just trying to remember our old friend in an "appropriate" way.

teetwoohsix 01-07-2011 09:07 AM

A great day!!

Great job Ed !! I myself hope to know how that feels one day. Just wanted to say congrats and please let us know if there is a way to view your collection (online) that would be awesome.

Sincerely, Clayton

Congratulations, and thank you for sharing your accomplishment.

Edwolf1963 01-07-2011 11:22 PM

Thank you

Thank you all for the comments feedback! Regarding scans - I plan to load up into a registry somewhere (most likely SGCs) but that (obviously) will take some time in listing and scan load. Right now they're logged and checked off in an Excel Spreadsheet - sorting through any dupes. What you may see up on the BST or in eBay are those and others looking to sell.

Quick hits:
  • Set has nothing really difficult as far as backs (IE: Lenox, Uzit, Drum, etc)
  • I was more focused on eye appeal and grading out 3 or higher.
  • Several Sovereign 460's, assorted mid-level tougher backs like Tolstoi.
  • First HOF was Johnson Portrait (I think the best looking card in the set).
  • Worst looking card IMO - probably Spike Shannon (hold that up against the detail of a Willis or Rucker Portrait is like comparing "Stewie" from Family Guy Cartoon to an art mural)
  • The Green Cobb (PSA3) was one of the last aquisitions.
  • Toughest SL'er was Cranston.
  • Best buy were several common raws in the $20 range that graded out 4 or better
  • Worst was any common 5 for $125 or more :D
  • SL'ers Paige and Manion look too much alike - bought one thinking the other just looking at the thumbnail pic once. Mr. Harris was then kind enough to trade with me for one I needed
  • Hardest common to get in a decent grade was Phelps for some reason - could find enough of them, just always in overpriced BINs
Thanks again!

Ed

Congrats

on slaying the beast!

Wow, congrats. My completion seems years away, but reading about those that actually accomplished it lends credence to the chase. Enjoy the victory!

Congrats!

Congrats, putting this set together is tough enough, but only collecting graded cards of 3 and above makes it that much tougher and that much more expensive.

I'm guessing that in the back of your mind you are constantly thinking about Demmitt and O'Hara, but it will take some serious money to find decent graded examples of these cards. Then, after Demmitt and O'Hara you won't be able to stop thinking about Magie.

Good luck! Rick

MooseWithFleas 01-09-2011 03:09 PM

Congrats on your very impressive set. I am in awe and dream of putting something like that together.

scmavl 01-10-2011 01:12 PM

Big congrats on that! When I completed my first set (1956 Topps, only 340 cards), I was thrilled. Can't imagine how you must feel.

As someone new to pre-war, what are considered "The Big Six"? Wagner & Plank obviously, but are the others errors? Thanks.
