What is the THIRD most desirable card out there?

I'd assume a T206 Wagner would be first and a '52 Mantle second, so what would be the #3 "most collectible" card in any condition?

Goudey Ruth?

Gehrig?

Mathewson?

'51 Bowman Mantle?

Cobb?

W Johnson?

Kawika 01-02-2011 03:44 PM

Probably would be a twenty-five way tie for third. Lot of very desirable cards out there.

sportscardpete 01-02-2011 03:45 PM

t206 eddie plank.. and i think a big part of it is that there is much mystery to it

AndyG09 01-02-2011 03:53 PM

1933 Goudey #106 Lajoie has to be in the mix.

It all depends on your collecting tastes
A '52 Mantle isn't in my top 200

bcbgcbrcb 01-02-2011 04:19 PM

Definitely the Baltimore News Ruth, actually I would put it #2 ahead of the '52 Mantle..................

Steve D 01-02-2011 04:24 PM

N172 Cap Anson in uniform would have to be in the running.

Steve

e107collector 01-02-2011 04:47 PM

I agree

One could also say the E107 Wagner.

Tony

Bigb13 01-02-2011 05:17 PM

How about a Cracker Jack Joe Jackson? Rob

ChiefBenderForever 01-02-2011 05:20 PM

T206 Plank at #1 !! Honus is so overated !!!!!!!!!!!!!

scmavl 01-02-2011 05:25 PM

I read there were around 100 Planks known to exist and just 60 Wagners or so? Either way, I'l never see one! :)

How much did the last Plank sell for?

oldjudge 01-02-2011 05:26 PM

Varies by person. For me the list is:

1. N172 Anson in Uniform
2. Baltimore News Ruth
3. T210 Jackson

I like the '52 Topps Mantle but it isn't in my top 50

talkinbaseball 01-02-2011 05:50 PM

3rd best

I love the 1914 cracker jack Christy Mathewson.

cdn_collector 01-02-2011 06:08 PM

Probably differs by collector, and by day, but for this collector on this day, a CJ Jackson can occupy the #3 spot. Although I'd change the top 2 as well...

Regards,

Richard.

Robextend 01-02-2011 06:13 PM

The 1933 Goudey Lajoie would be in my top 3.

vintagecpa 01-02-2011 06:15 PM

What about the m101 4/5 Ruth?

White Borders 01-02-2011 06:34 PM

Cobb/Cobb

Red Cobb with Ty Cobb back.

Leon 01-02-2011 06:38 PM

If there was one it would be cool but he didn't play that early....maybe you mean M101-4/5?

bbsports 01-02-2011 07:01 PM

How about e90-1 Joe Jackson. That was earlier than his Cracker Jack cards.

It's the details that kill you in this hobby. That is the rookie Ruth I was referring to. I guess for me, it would be #1.

terjung 01-02-2011 09:58 PM

Globally, your #1 is probably accurate, but from there it goes by taste. On a pre-WW2 vintage board, you'd probably not get overwhelming support for the '52 Topps Mantle being the #2 desirable card. It being the second most recognized globally might be a different discussion, though.

Truth be told, if I had a T206 Wagner, I'd sell it because it is so universally acclaimed in order to get cards that are more desirable to me. My point is that desirability is a personal choice. So, the question really is, "What is your #3?"

fkw 01-02-2011 10:42 PM

There are many cards above that hyped up common Mantle IMO

In "Excellent" condition (PSA-5) Id much rather have these and a dozen others Im sure.

T206 Doyle NatL
Balt News Ruth
T211 Jackson
E90-1 Jackson
Cabanas Hill
T206 Plank
E107 Wagner
E107 Mathewson
N172 Anson portrait
Tip Top Grove
Just So ... a couple including Young
US Caramel Lindstrom
R319 Goudey #106 Durocher Proof
Boston Garders ...a few
etc.

funny :) M101-4/5 is not Ruths rookie to some, I call the Balt New Ruth's rookie :)

So If I was talking to you Id be confused right there

Leon 01-02-2011 11:10 PM

Prookie card..

The Baltimore News Ruth is his, usually much preferred, prookie card.

vintagecpa 01-03-2011 12:41 AM

Oh no, not this debate. Tough crowd tonight.

benjulmag 01-03-2011 05:14 AM

How about the Four Base Hits Kelly? For my nickel, it is my single favorite card. Besides depicting a very important 19th century HOFer at the absolute peak of his popularity, it is the most artistic baseball card of which I am aware. The image used was taken in a photo shoot in which multiple poses were shot, clearly indicative of the desire to make the image something special.

tonyk1975 01-03-2011 06:24 AM

I've always have been intrigued by 1933 Goudey Lajoie going far back as to when I was a kid. I would rank that card above both Mantle and Wagner for this collector.

I agree! I am imagining by selling a T206 Wagner I would be able to finish off all of my sets/upgrades, and have plenty of money left over to start a couple more projects that I've always wanted to.

Irwin Fletcher 01-03-2011 07:53 AM

1989 Fleer Billy Ripken "F Face" card?

Seriously, though, I'd probably have to agree with many others and go with the 1933 Goudey Lajoie.

4815162342 01-03-2011 08:25 AM

1990 Topps Frank Thomas NNOF!

But seriously, it has to be the T206 Plank. I'd even take a Plankenstein.

ChiefBenderForever 01-03-2011 08:37 AM

If I had a Wagner I would sell it, buy a Plank and both Mantle Rc's and every Chief Bender I could get my hands on.

Wesley 01-03-2011 09:07 AM

The E107 Wagner and E107 Mathewson should be very high on the list.

scmavl 01-03-2011 08:42 PM

I really meant this post to be "WHAT IS THE UNIVERSALLY ACCEPTED NUMBER THREE CARD?" but it turned into more of a personal thing, which is very cool.

I think my personal #3 would be a '34 Goudey Gehrig. It's not rare, but I just love it:

triwak 01-03-2011 09:30 PM

My top 10 dream cards (in any order):

1. 1914 Baltimore News Babe Ruth
2. 1863 Jordan & Co. Harry Wright
3. 1909 T206 Honus Wagner
4. 1869 Peck & Snyder Cincinnati Red Stockings
5. 1950 Toleteros Josh Gibson
6. 1909 Red Ty Cobb with Ty Cobb back
7. 1933 Goudey Nap Lajoie
8. 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle
9. 1909 Cabanas Pete Hill
10. 1887 Four Base Hits King Kelly

Robextend 01-03-2011 09:55 PM

My top ten would be:

1. 1933 Goudey Lajoie
2. E107 Waddell
3. 1952 Topps Mantle
4. T206 Hindu Waddell
5. 1952 Topps Mathews
6. Rose Co. Waddell
7. T206 Tolstoi Cobb (Red Portrait or Bat Off)
8. 1951 Bowman Mantle
9. Any 1933 Goudey Ruth
10. 1934 Goudey Gehrig

paulcarek 01-03-2011 10:47 PM

3. T204 Johnson

leaflover 01-03-2011 11:07 PM

#3???...It's a toss-up

2 Attachment(s)
But then again I'm a leaflover.

novakjr 01-05-2011 08:59 PM

But It's nearly impossible to rank anything by desire, there's so much to choose from.

That being said, I know this is a pre-war thread, and that's my main collecting focus, BUT the 1990 Topps George Bush and 1954 Bowman Ted Williams have always been intriguing.

Anyways, I think I'd have the 1869 Peck & Snyder Red Stockings team card in the top 3 somewhere, along with the 1934 Zeenut Dimaggio, and probably the Wagner.

I'd also wanna squeeze any of the 1893 Just So HOFers in there somewhere...

Mikehealer 01-06-2011 05:12 AM

Wow Mike, nice Lajoie.

g_vezina_c55 05-28-2012 05:26 PM

it is different for me, the 52 mantle topps is not in my top desirable list....

For me it is easy and not original
1- t206 wagner
2- t206 plank
3- 33 goudey lajoie

bbcard1 05-28-2012 08:37 PM

I always liked the 1977 Topps Biff Pocoroba.

phikappapsi 05-28-2012 08:45 PM

It's not nearly as expensive as some others, but due to my love for black and white...I put the '39 play ball Teddy way up on the list

Powell 05-28-2012 09:16 PM

I love the Plow's Candy Cobb

esd10 05-28-2012 09:23 PM

1869 peck & snyder redstockings

camlov2 05-28-2012 09:58 PM

If you posted a picture of each of the cards listed I think the most selected cards (recognizable to the most people) would be...

Cracker Jack-Joe Jackson
Baltimore-Ruth
Goudey-Lajoie

GaryPassamonte 05-29-2012 05:23 AM

Corey- I'm with you on the FBHs Kelly. It has it all. The M101-5/4 would be another great choice. This is Ruth's true rookie card. The Baltimore News card is a minor league card. You can call it a pre-rookie or a prookie, but it's not a rookie.
