My first few packages arrived and am thrilled to add them to my collection.

First off is this famous 1939 TYPE 1 photo of the Iron Man. (I'm lucky Ben already had it or it could have been a blood bath!) :eek:

And this 1964 Beatles Fan Club newsletter with postal cancellation that was put out by a 16 year old fan from Arizona. I just love this piece and won it for the first bid price of ten bucks! :)

Wow, 2011 really started off with a bang!

sayhey24 Greg listed some really cool 1973 All Star game locker tags on the BST section yesterday morning. One of these was for one of my primary collecting focuses, HOFer Nolan Ryan. Growing up an Angels fan in So Cal, Nolan Ryan was always my favorite player. The Angels era portion of my advanced Ryan collection has always been my pride and joy with special emphasis on the year 1973, which IMHO, was Ryan's best year. The site of the 1973 All Star game, KC Royals Stadium, was significant for Nolan because it had been the place that he threw his 1st of 7 career no-hitters just 2 months prior on 5/15/73.

The 1973 All Star game was noteworthy for Ryan because it was the 1st time that he actually pitched in the mid-summer classic. He was added to the 1972 AL All Star roster as a special write in vote, but did not play. Ironically, in the year that Nolan Ryan dominated baseball, he got lit up at the 1973 All Star game. I believe that he called his and Angels teammate Bill Singers' appearance in the AS game "like throwing gasoline on a fire!"

In an interesting side note, these 1973 locker tags first appeared on eBay several years ago. I've been bummed that I didn't get the Ryan 1973 All Star locker tag the 1st time around, but sometimes in this hobby you get lucky and get a second crack at a special item. Thanks to Greg I added this one yesterday! :D

Thanks Jimmy! I'm not 100% sure about the dimensions of the All star lock tag yet, but most likely it will get added to my Ryan Angels display case. I'll shoot some photos when I get it all squared away.

Started the New Year right by visiting a few small Antique Malls in So. VA. Bought the Piedmont Porcelain sign and this odd / unique 1948 Red Robin Hornets Broadside - good DC area item.

Picked up this ORIGINAL Teds Creamy Root Beer tray and 12 oz bottle(1959). These are hard to find. You see lots of the fantasy pieces and reproductions associated with this issue, but rarely does the real thing pop up.

Just picked this up. Marilyn Monroe Original Vicente Pharmacy Receipt Dated May 12 1962. Just 3 months later she would be dead of an overdose.

Looks like Marilyn was buying bottles of peroxide in order to keep up those platinum blond looks. This also makes this a cool receipt in addition to the obvious historical connection...

What I find fascinating about some of you guys pickups, with the Marilyn receipt in mind in this case, is not just having the financial means, but WHERE DO YOU FIND THIS STUFF? I know there are major auctions all the time, etc etc, but man, some of this stuff is world class and it seems to pop out of the woodwork.

1944 Pacific Service World Series ticket- Johnny VanderMeer
 

I just picked up a pretty neat ticket from the 2nd game of the 1944 Pacific Service World Series that was played on September 23, 1944.

In this game, "Double No-Hit" Cincinnati Reds hurler Johnny VanderMeer and the Navy team bested losing pitcher Al Lein (of SF Seals PCL) and the Army 8-2.

The 1944 Pacific League Championship Series (World Series) was the brainchild of Army Chief of Staff George Marshall, who in the spring of 1944, determined that there were over 280 former major league players in active military service. The Series that pitted the Army and Navy's best was an 11 game series played at different military bases in Hawaii between Sept. 22, 1944 and Oct. 15th, 1944.

Behind the mostly outstanding pitching of the Navy staff the Navy team won 9 of the 11 games.

Some of the major leaguers that played in this Pacific Service World Series included:
Johnny VanderMeer, Virgil Trucks (he also threw 2 no-hitters while playing with the Tigers in 1952), Phil Rizzuto, Bill Dickey, Schoolboy Rowe, Johnny Beazley, Joe Gordon, Joe Grace, Ken Sears, Tom Ferrick. Hugh Casey,
Johnny Mize, Barney McCloskey, Walter Judnich and Johnny Lucadello to name a few.

This is a pretty neat ticket. I've got to wonder how many of these survived after all of these years?

one heck of a score for me. TWO Buster Keaton autographs. It isnt the greatest photo ever but a signed Keaton photo is hard to find. The menu is from 1920 making it the earliest Keaton autograph I have ever seen and it has Tom Mix twice as well!

A couple new ring bats. They were really December pick ups. Its the earliest Reach bat I've ever encountered. It predates the Keystone Logo.

Picked up these as part of a lot of Christy Walsh postcards. I think they are pretty cool.

1941 game used ball
 

This Harridge baseball was fouled off by Al Brancato of the Athletics on July 10, 1941. Further research shows that the opposing pitcher in that game was Bob Feller. He went the distance for his 99th career win. He won his 100th on his next start 4 days later.

Very sweet ball.

How cool is it to hold that ball and to know that Bob Feller held it on a major league mound in 1941?

Here we have Rose hitting his 4,192nd hit, becoming MLB's all-time leader. Don't know if it's a Type 1 or not (not that it matters), but there is a more modern slug and UPI stamp on the back - if that means anything to anyone, that is.

Either way, I thought it could be a nice image for a painting!

picked this up on long island antique shopping. paid 200.00. great shape just missing the strap. is it approx. 1915 and what are they worth. any help would be great.

estate auction pickups
 

Busy day at the estate auction game, as My dad and I picked up a decent group of pennants, and a few early football and baseball relics. In the group was a red and blue stitch baseball and a smaller sized red stitched baseball. The smaller one is probably just about a 1/2 inch less in diameter than the other ball. Has anyone seen a smaller ball like this one? Did they make smaller sized balls for kids in the 1910 to 1920 time period? I know newer little league balls are the same size as regular balls, and it doesn't make sense to make them smaller for kids as they'd be harder to hit anyway. Could this be an earlier 19th century example? Any advice would be appreciated. The football pieces included a Wright and Ditson dog ear, reach shoulder pads, and an unmarked football.

no makers mark on mine that i could see. what do these dog ears usually go for. are they around 1910.

I would guess 1915 to 1920 as far as age, and I think you made a good buy. I think value would be in the $250 to $350 range without a maker.

I would say that's much better than a "decent group of pennants" you have there Keith. I would be willing to wager that the Cincinnati pennant is a particularly scarce design. And the Dodgers pennant is a gem as well. That version always seem to bring a premium price. Really nice group. Great find!

I haven't seen the Cincinatti pennant before (not that I track Reds pennants that much), and didn't see it listed in Mike Egner's guide, so was hoping it could be a rarer one.

I love it when I pick something up and it's even better than I thought...I won this 1958 Western League Register (basically a media guide). I had no idea until I got it that it belonged to the General Manager of the Lincoln team -Dick Wagner. Cincinnati fans may know who he was as he held that same position with the Big Red Machine of the 1970s. His name is on the front cover...can it be considered an autograph? As an aside Wagner was the youngest GM in the history of professional baseball..he was only 19 years old when he was GM of the Thomasville club of the Georgia-Florida League in 1947.

Absolutely Josh, post them all. I'm an avid Walsh collector myself. Several years ago I stumbled on to Christy Jr's wife, daughter, and son in law, and was the first person to buy from them since Barry Halper back in the eighties. (So I got that going for me. ;) )

Regardless, it's just in the last year or so that advanced Ruth collectors have shown quite a bit of interest in Walsh estate memorabilia and photos (huge prices realized in Heretage's last auction), so your collection is extremely rare and if I was you, I'd sit on them and enjoy 'em.

I do indeed have that Reds Pennant. It's a toughie, but not impossible to find if you are very patient. Definitely a great haul Keith... that group of pennants alone is worth well over $600. Nice pickups by everyone!

Nice collection of pennants from the 40s and 50s. The Reds(legs) pennant is a pretty rare one made by Keezer Mfg., and might even be stamped as such on the back. Same goes for the Braves pennant in your batch. These are identifiable by their very thick tassels, two color print, and simple-yet-elegant designs. (The STL Browns pennant from this "series" is on my personal want list.)

I believe this is a 1912 WSC Magic Lantern Slide. Will soon see.
