Best post-war pickup would have to be the '53 Topps artwork for Vinegar Bend Mizell from REA. That was a great selection they had but it kind of made you wonder where the primo ones were - the Mantle, Mays etc.
Other pickups were a Stahl-Meyer Bobby Thomson as a type card for the set - a good representative, no?, a decent '54 Topps Ernie Banks - a sort-of tribute card to my ancient young self in that it was the very first baseball card I ever owned back around 1955 or so, a raft of Dormands including Stengel and Ellie Howard, and a couple of photos I liked from Mears - Yogi and Joe Adcock taking their cuts. http://photos.imageevent.com/kawika_...k%20Mizell.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/kawika_...homson%201.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/kawika_...0Banks%201.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/kawika_...%20Stengel.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/kawika_...d%20Howard.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/kawika_...rra%201957.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/kawika_...ock%201954.jpg |
Great pickups David, love that crisp looking Banks RC!!

Hey Adam, what issue are the Fox and Ashburn cards??? I'd love to get my hands on one of those Nellie Fox cards.

Tough choice because I have trouble remembering what I bought last month, let alone all year. This is not my best pick up, but it was my last pick up of the year and a card that I have always wanted, so I will show it: http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x...ds/Zernial.jpg |
I believe that the Fox and Ashburn are Philadelphia Bulletin issues from c1949-50. Newspaper cut-outs but a catalogued issue.

Definitely this Clemente item...after a 15 year search, was able to finally pick this up (2 extra HOF'ers to boot).

Here are my best, although they aren't really in the same league as the stuff on here already. Nice cards, guys!

Mike Mike---congratulations on this pick up. I think I have a set of these, assuming the final checklist is revised to excise a couple that seem not to exist. I think there should be vote/contest on which figure looks least and most like the person alleged to be depicted. :) |
Thanks Al,
Is your set in singles form, panels or a combo of both. I only have the panel and another single, but to be honest, I don't think this is a set I am going to try to complete. My interests are definitely more in the pre-1920 era. But as a Clemente collector, I had wanted this for a long time. As far as your question about likeness goes. I know they are a little crude, but I think in most cases they resemble who they are supposed to. I think, for example Clemente is spot on and also Kaline, Rose, etc. A very tough set even with Drent's find in Scranton. Even now with higher (relatively speaking) availability, it will still take a small fortune to complete the set. Congrats on completing it, a very notable achievement in the world of Topps Test collecting. I don't think many people realize how scarce these truly are. Also, a while ago you had mailed me photocopies of some of the Plaks in your collection, and I just wanted to thank you again. Mike |

Plaks
Mike---the set I have is a combination of singles and panels. I also have an unopened pack. I will defer to you on the likeness question. Maybe you have a better imagination than I do :). When Mile High was selling a bunch of these they pointed out there was a Mantle variation...big nose versus small nose. A friend of mine also has a set. He has big and I have small
