December pickup thread

I'll start it off with one that arrived earlier this week - it's as close to THE Wagner as I'll likely ever be, but I'm pretty happy about it!

Great way to start December Scott!

Speaking of E93s...I just BINed this George Gibson E93 on eBay earlier tonight.

kcohen, that Kelly is one of my all-time favorite cards, and in that amazing condition too, congrats!!! I just love the stormy background and tough look that Kelly has, he looks more like a pirate or ex-con than a ballplayer (but I guess most did back then).
and scott, nice wagner! that's on my want list! |
Sweet Cap crate

Although not a card, I picked this item up for my man cave. A crate top for Sweet Caporal Cigs. I thought it was unique and different and still part of the Tobacco cards

Got this off the BST. I've been looking for a Zip Zabel card for a while. Fellow Kansan along with Larry Cheney. Was pleasantly surprised at the size of this postcard. The inner picture is the same size as a standard pc. Thanks to Phil Garry for a great transaction.

Arrived today. Definitely low grade, but will stick in the pc until I find a suitable Lajoie portrait replacement. |
I'm still waiting for a few big ticket items from the auction houses to get here but, in the meantime, here are some of the cards I have landed in the past couple of months.
Picked up the "Sweet Caporal" postcard from good ol' Dan Yaw on eBay. It depicts a game between Baltimore and Montreal circa 1905. Love this card. It's a clear window unto a baseball moment a century ago. What's not clear is who made the play to first. It's hard to see but the Baltimore player on the left is wearing a glove on his right hand; if he's the pitcher he seems out of place with respect to the position of the first baseman. Might have been a bunt or a grounder right to the bag. Maybe one of you field generals can explain it to me. http://photos.imageevent.com/kawika_...poral%20pc.jpg Holy Toledo! That baserunner is going to be out by a mile. The catcher is Fred Abbott. Anybody got his T206? Shortstop could be one of a couple of guys but second baseman would likely be Harry Hinchman, another T206er. That field looks like you could shoot pool on it. A beautiful day for baseball in 1909. EBay seller was judwilson; he has some terrific postcards and is a straight-up guy. http://photos.imageevent.com/kawika_...oledo%20pc.jpg The "Champions" are from St Louis College which is actually a high school (and sports powerhouse) in Honolulu near where I live. These youngsters look just like the kids that I see today when I drive past the campus. Some of them even look like they're wearing Dockers. Those little Hawaiian urchins off to the side make this card a winner. http://photos.imageevent.com/kawika_...%20BB%20pc.jpg One more Red Belt for the cause. Just need three more for a basic set. http://photos.imageevent.com/kawika_...0and%20Run.jpg Big Thanks to our Paul G. for making a handful of PC796s available to me and for the quick and flawless BST transaction. Just need four more to round out the set although they're all tough HOFers. http://photos.imageevent.com/kawika_...96%20Dooin.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/kawika_...6%20Chance.jpg Big Thanks also to our Frank W., the kama'aina from Kentucky, for sending some of his Series 6 bad boys back to his ancestral Oahu home. http://photos.imageevent.com/kawika_...-6%20Chase.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/kawika_...-6%20Oyler.jpg And . . . a couple of Dormand Yankees including the difficult Mr. Howard to round out the show'n'tell. If anyone has a Skowron they would consider parting with please remember who loves ya. http://photos.imageevent.com/kawika_...nd%20Bauer.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/kawika_...d%20Howard.jpg Afterword: I compiled this post while thinking of the exuberant comments Bill Hedin made the other day about our Hobby. In spite of all the BS and negativity, at the end of the day it's the shared passion for America and baseball and cards that makes it such a great pastime. Thanks for reminding us and hope you enjoyed these cards, Bill. |

Very cool Combs Rookie Card, even tougher than the '26 Exhibit! |

Great Kut Outs, Paul!

Fantastic postcards David. I've nver collected those, but the great game scenes on the ones you shared makes me reconsider.
Continuing my T206 march, picked up some of the local boys off EBay: http://lh6.ggpht.com/_xAPkPXpAcrw/TP...0-%20front.jpghttp://lh5.ggpht.com/_xAPkPXpAcrw/TP...0-%20front.jpg And also my first EPDG back: http://lh6.ggpht.com/_xAPkPXpAcrw/TP...0-%20front.jpghttp://lh4.ggpht.com/_xAPkPXpAcrw/TP...20-%20rear.jpg |

Finally got around to replacing a card I lost a long time ago...this was my first tobacco card when I was a wee lad and, thanks to Bob Hamlin, I now have this card back in my collection. Now maybe I need to get Mr. McElveen some fellow T205's to keep him company...
|
Nice pickup Leon, figured it was you.
Looking forward to the other pickups from you David! |
I look forward to getting this in the mail from Goodwin and Co. soon!

thank you to Hank Thomas and to SGC for slabbing so quickly. http://www.internetville.com/images/...1912_wajo.jpeg |
Joe, outstanding Big Train rppc......
Love it!! |
wow Joe!

Love that T206 Johnson. I'm looking for one with a Sweet Cap back and about 3 grades lower. Thus, December pickups just became the "look longingly and covet" thread.

T210 orange border

I was able to help Ted Z. complete his Sovereign back T-206 collection by trading my Young portrait in exchange for this little gem, and three other cards, including another Cy portrait for my T-206 collection. (The borders of the Jones are orange, although they look reddish in my scan.)
You're the man, Ted! Cheers, Mike |
Lajoie Throwing

I love the colors on this one, and I'm a little surprised it received a qualifier. It would have been out of my price range if it hadn't, so I'm glad it did.
|
Nice card Luke and I agree, definitely no need for the qualifier.
|
Thanks Rob
I'm planning to send some cards in to SGC some time soon. Do you think this card might grade out at a 50 without a qualifier if I tried to cross it over?
|
Luke:
My best guess is that SGC would grade it a 40 |
I would guess 40 because of the staining, but I would definitely cross it over!

Thanks guys,
Since we're on the subject:
When you want to cross a card over to another grading company, do you send it in the other company's holder, or crack it out? If I were to send this card into SGC in the PSA slab, do you think SGC would be more likely to give it a qualifier just because PSA did? |
SGC doesn't give qualifiers, and I usually leave the card in the holder.
|
Thanks Rob!

Toronto got 4 in the bottom of the 4th against Newark. In the Providence Buffalo game, Buffalo got 3 in the bottom of the 1st, Providence got 3 in the top of the 3rd. Jersey city got 3 in the top of the first, 1 in the 3rd and it looks like 2 in the 4th against Rochester. That is probably enought to figure this out. I'm thinking Eastern League box scores would be in The Sporting News, available on line from Paper of Record I believe. Yes I was born in Chicago, same year as you. |
