T206 Question: Good Price?
Hi everyone. I just bought a SGC graded T206 Nap Lajoie Portrait with an Old Mill back. There is only 1 Old Mill back Lajoie Portrait in the PSA pop report and only 1 in the SGC report. It was in low grade, but is this considered a scarce back for a Lajoie? Would it be a premium at all to T206 collectors? I didn't pay much, so any information is greatly appreciated from the T206 collectors here. Thanks,
Andrew |
I think you'll find...
...That Old Mill will sometimes bring a light premium for commons, but not much of a bump for HOFers. Nice card, to be sure, but not much excitement in Old Mill.

Yeah, Old Mill backs are not super tough, but just wanted to know since it is not common for a Lajoie Portrait to have a Old Mill back. Like in the PSA report, there is 18 Old Mill Lajoie with bat versus the lone portrait. Thank you for the info.:)

When I first saw your post, I initially thought similar to T206Collector -- that the Old Mill back wouldn't give much of a bump for a HOFer front. For example, T206museum.com lists the Old Mill as a 1.3 multiplier (ie, 30% bump) for common fronts but no increase for someone like Lajoie.
But then I checked on VCP (given that you had already combed through the PSA and SGC pop reports), and they only record 2 sales of a Lajoie Portrait with Old Mill back (and SGC 30 for $180 and a PSA 4 for $750), versus innumerable sales with Piedmont/SC fronts. So I wonder if you actually might be onto something. |
All other things being equal, most collectors will take an Old Mill over a Piedmont or Sweet Cap. Typical premium is 15-20% in my experience.

Also, my impression is that the T206.org valuation calculator uses the same numbers as T206museum.com, with the difference that T206museum lists the individual back and grade multipliers. |
hindu back
t206.org, their valuation is really off on hindu backs

Just speaking for myself, but I will pay top dollar for a tough combo, but only if it is something I need/want. Pretty much the only time it hurts is when someone else needs it too. I was willing to pay way over market for one combo that I needed for a very long time, but got it at half of what my bid was, just because no other folks needed the card.
I have also been blown out of the water on some cards that I did not think were that special. I think that is one of the fun things about the T206 front/back combos. I paid top dollar for my SC350/460 Factory 25 Joss when I need that combo and paid well above market for a SC 350,25 Collins a couple weeks ago. It only brings the money if you find one person willing to pay for it at a set price or two folks in an auction. Not sure if that is clear or not, but hjope all is well, Bob |

I wonder who won that Lajoie Cycle?
