1890 Brooklyn Bridegrooms at the Castillo

I thought that people might be interested in seeing a Joseph Hall Cabinet of the 1890 Brooklyn Bridegrooms at the "Old Spanish Fort" in St. Augustine, Fl.

Today the Old Spanish Fort is now refered to as the Castillo de San Marcos.

I sent a copy of this photo to the people at the Castillo and they did not have it in their archives.

I personally thought that it was cool to match up the background locations and to see the natural decay of the fort over a long period of time.

did you see the 1890 brooklyn bridegrooms cabinet on ebay?

I wrote an article about that photo in 2008 that dated the photo and ID'd the players (the ID's in the auction description come from the article and are correct). It also included the Charlie Reynolds solo photo they are selling. Excerpt below:

While nearly the same group comprised the 1889 AA champion Brooklyn team, the appearance of Daly and McGunnigle in the same photo dates this to 1890, the year that the club shifted to the NL. The presence of Charlie Reynolds, who is listed only on the 1889 roster, may create some confusion. However, he was briefly with the 1890 club during the spring.

Ebay Brooklyn cabinet

Since the auction is over ($610.), I thought the Bridegrooms team cabinet sold for a decent price, considering the condition. I was the underbidder in this auction & though I don't know who the winner was, I'd like to congratulate him/her on the pick-up as he/she must be amassing quite the 19th century cabinet photo collection. I can't count the number Ebay auctions I've lost out to this Ebayer.

bmarlowe-Where can I find these articles you've written on baseball photography? I'd love to read them. Also, who, in your opinion, was the photographer of this photo? Joseph Hall? Gardner & Co.? Thanks, Jeremy

I bid on this as well, but was also concerned about condition--it is always hard when you see condition flaws and can't evaluate them in person. Do you think that Gardner was also the photographer, since their stamp was on the back of the Reynolds portrait?

And speaking of that solo portrait, I was surprised that it went for more than the team cabinet, even though it was in better condition. Reynolds wasn't a very significant player...

Just curious--on what 19th century cabinets has he outbid you recently?

I assume the photographer was Gardner & Co., but I'm not sure. I'm hoping bmarlowe will chime in on that one.

As far as being outbid, I believe it was a Billy Nash cabinet, several Pittsburgh cabinets (inc. Mack, Beckley,etc.), & a Horner cabinet. With the way Ebay blocks I.D.s, I could be wrong.

Somewhere I have a picture of my 4th grade elementary school class standing in that exact same spot.
